Happy Chinese New Year! Today is the start of the Chinese lunar year, and we have officially crossed over from The Year of the Pig into The Year of the Rat. The cookies above are peanut cookies for the New Year, and they look delicious!
Check out more photos of Chinese New Year cookies at Flickr. Are you cooking for the New Year? Any dumpling plans?

We will most likely make our annual pilgrimage to Happy Chef (dim sum house).

I'm having a Chinese New Year party on Saturday. Still trying to figure out the menu. Right now, it's potstickers from the local chinese take out place, salad rolls from another take out place, mini-egg rolls, egg drop soup and grilled chicken skewers with various dipping sauces.

In our family, it's tradition to go all vegetarian on New Year's day. It's called eating "chay" in Vietnamese. We make a stew of kabocha squash, fried tofu, eggplant, taro root, lotus, and some other things I can't identify, that my parents and aunts and uncles throw together. You eat that with pickled radishes, carrots and chile peppers. And we also eat a steamed sticky rice cake that's wrapped in banana leaves and filled w/ mung beans. Sooo delish!

i went to a dumpling making party and it was fun! lots of rolling, spooning, and pinching and boiling at 6 different grad student households - it was communal, fun, and delicious!
