I'm so glad that apple season is here again. I haven't had apples in a few months. NYS apples (local for me) taste so much better than the ones from Chile, but they often don't have supplies to keep them in the stores through the next harvest.
My favorites for snacking - Gala and Cortland. My favorites for baking pies - Granny Smith.
BTW, apple trees (and many other fruits) can be grown in a very small area. Look for information on espaliering fruit trees - single cordons take up the least area. You can order some varieties through the Arbor Day Foundation. (And they will tell you which varieties you can grow in your area.)

Great apple chart! I bought three pounds of Gravenstein's the other day. OMG so delicious. I made apple hand pies with half, inspired by smittenkitchen's peach ones, and we ate the rest out of hand.

Best apples for snacking on? Cripps Pink or Honey Crisp. The Honey Crisp apples are harder to find, but man oh man, are they gooooood.

There are no sour apples save for Granny Smiths here in CA. It's a travesty. They are all sweet varieties. No cortland.
