I like that idea of a double boiler. I use a small metal mixing bowl over a pan of water, myself (Thank you, Alton Brown and Ikea!) but that one has a handle, which would undoubtedly make it easier.

The cake was terrible... liquid amounts were off... and I got a custard with a cake edge. Not good, not appealing, especially after all the work.
