At the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market last week, we saw blueberries for the first time this season in San Francisco.

We love our blueberries. Whether they're blended in a smoothie, made in a syrup and drizzled over pancakes, baked in muffins, mixed in ice cream, sprinkled over cereal, baked in pies, or eaten raw, we'll take them. Those little globes of sweetness are good for you, too; they're packed with antioxidants and vitamins, so grab them while they're in season and eat away.
Maine is the largest producer of blueberries in the world. They grow 25% of the blueberries in North America. Blueberries are native to North America and have been introduced in other parts of the world. Their growing season runs from May to September.

Lately I've been crazy about breakfast quinoa (thanks to 101cookbooks): quinoa cooked in water and milk, with toasted walnuts, cinnamon, blueberries, and a bit of honey. But, like you, I love blueberries and will eat them in all sorts of ways.

My favorite way to use fresh blueberries is in Ina Garten's tri-berry muffin recipe. Diced strawberries, whole blueberries & blackberries, unsalted butter, flour, raw sugar, eggs, cinnamon, kosher salt, baking soda & powder is all you need for warm, yummy heaven.

My favorite blueberry dish is straight up with a little cream... it feels very decadent.
A close second, though, is to cook the blueberries with a little sugar to make a compote, then use them with some sliced almonds in a baked brie.

Nothing more refreshing than vanilla ice cream and blueberries! And very nutritious in your morning cereal!

Sour cream and sugar!...that's how my great grandmother always served berries. I think it's an Old World thing.
Not that I don't like that or muffins or drinks or cobblers or anything else, but I'm a bit of a purist when fruits are at their peak. I prefer them...blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, melons, peaches, etc...at their perfect best with absolutely nothing added.

This sounds so traditional, but blueberries with whole milk vanilla yogurt is so delicious that it's more like a dessert than a breakfast!

America's Test Kitchen's Blueberry Boy Bait (like blueberry coffeecake) is very good. And in the summer Nick Malgieri's Blueberry Muffins are almost a weekly treat.

At my last visit to my dentist she pointed out the inside of my front teeth were stained becasue of all the blueberries I eat (3-4 times a week with breakfast). Oh well, I'm still eating them.
