Here's a funky old butcher block measuring 24" x 30" x 33" going for $150. A little buff with some sand-paper and a nice dousing of mineral oil and you'd be good to go.

Ya getchaself a decent palm sander for around $35 or so and spend, oh... about 15 or 20 minutes and that block thing will look very, very nice. Ya just gotta have plenty of room for it; that's all. But in many apartments there's no island of peninsula, so that might just do the trick. Also there's something kind of sculptural about it, since it might be also viewed from an adjoining living area.
I have one of these in my basement that my dad kept from when he closed his store. He was an actual butcher. I have a soft spot for stuff like this.
