NY Times Dining Section Roundup: 6.27.07

We're envisioning New Yorkers standing on the steamy, stalled subways right now, reading The New York Times' Dining Section and planning to make cold-brewed iced coffe for the morning commute back to the office. Who else is making a pitcher of cold-brewed coffee tonight?

Reflections in an Ice Cube: The Drinks of Memory : The week, the Times focuses on six drink recipes -- iced coffee, frozen daiquiri, sour cherry syrup for soda or cocktails, Long Island Iced Tea, white sangria, and the rum and pineapple based Greenpoint Shuffle. "The right summer drink at the right moment feels like a lifeline and can stamp itself on the memory for years," write the editors.

A Bit of History, Reborn in a Glass: Sticking with the drinks themes, the trend-seekers at the Times point out a "heightened interest in bitters."

My brother has been serving cold-brew coffee at his shop here in Anchorage for years. It's lovely stuff! The bitterness and acidity in coffee is brought out with the more traditional hot water method, and this way it comes out very smooth.

I keep a pitcher of cold-brew coffee concentrate in my fridge all summer long. According to the Commander's Kitchen cookbook-where I first found the recipe-it keeps in the fridge for about a month.

Sharbat-e-albalu (Sour cherry syrup) is truly one of the great joys of Persian summers. I have a bottle of Adriatic brand sour cherry syrup on my counter right now, waiting for the summer to come (It's been raining SO much in Texas.) This year, I'm planning to be an infidel and try the syrup with vodka and soda

Ohh! I must try to find bottled sour cherry syrup. Due to a late freeze, there was only one week of sour cherries at the Farmer's Market this year, and I've been missing them terribly!

Mmmm sour cherry-soda-vodka! Am currently drinking vodka with elderflower cordial and soda its good! And absolutely necessary of course, as its cold, rainy and generally un-June-like here (Yorkshire) and I can persuade myself its summery...!
