It's really hard to focus on anything else in today's NY Times Dining Section when the cover story was about Trader Joe's. So bear with me if we seem a little less interested in the day's other topics.

For Trader Joe's, a New York Taste Test: A run down on how Trader Joe's develops it's addictive products, and the good news of the 14th Street opening on March 17th. You'll be hearing a lot more from us about this in the coming days.

When There's Only Snow on the Grill: The Minimalist talks about winter as if it's just begun... the point, he says, is to have really great ribs while it's still freezing out. So take to the snowy grill (he finishes his ribs on the grill at the end of the video!) it's already March, after all. Come on, Bittman!

Feta Unbound: Greek Cheese= Triumphs in Court: A victory for Greek feta, which now enjoys "protected designation of origin" status, meaning in Europe, the name "feta" can be applied only to cheese created by traditional methods within specific regions of Greece.

Time for Some Irish, but Why the Wait?: Asimov takes the week off of wine and tastes a few Irish Whiskeys.

Ha! I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the Trader Joe's article to be so distracting. I didn't get the chance to finish the article on my subway ride to work. I had to hide the article under my desk so I could focus on work. I hope I can get there on opening day!
The article about Trader Joe's was exciting because I am moving from California to New York in July and the thought of having a trader joe's in the area helps ease my fears of not having access to my fix.
I thought it was weird that they didn't talk more about the low prices at TJ's for the quality of food. I think that this is TJ's most revalutionary addition to the grocery world. Most people want to eat healthy food, but can't afford it. TJs helps people do that.
Regardless, I am so excited.
maybe i'm just feeling cranky and pessimistic today, but i highly doubt that the prices at the TJ in manhattan will be as cheap as they are anywhere else in the country
it is impossible for these big chains to come in and keep their NYC prices equal to what they are in the suburbs where leases are cheaper
the prices at the target in brooklyn are more exp than at the target in upstate NY, the prices at the whole foods in union square are more than at any other whole foods i've ever visited
i think anyone that expects to walk into TJs and see the same low low prices as they have in their suburban stores is nuts
me three on the TJs fascination - everything else became invisible. Mildly interesting about the feta designation -- my coop gets pretty good feta from Bulgaria.
SO fingers crossed that TJs wine store will be more like California TJ and less like DC TJ
ann, maybe not so nuts.
I read somewhere that NYU gave them a deal -- keeping it low low for the college kids?
I hope so.
wish they were coming to Brooklyn instead of Whole Foods!
DC is getting one in June -- at the Foggy Bottom Metro! Almond butter at well under $15.99 a jar!
