Daily Preserves: Are You a City Pickler?

2007_10_30-Pickles.jpg''I must pickle,'' she says, ''I have no control over that.''

As Harvest Month draws to a close and we wrap up our daily feature of preserves, pickles, and jams, we bring you a story instead of a recipe. For a City's Picklers, A Font of Recipes: It's the Melting Pot, a story by Molly O'Neill for the NY Times in 1990, explores the challenges of being a committed pickler in the city.

How do you find space to dry kim chi cabbage in the sun? What do you do about vinegar fumes from your mango pickle? The diehard commitment of the City Pickler is explored. And there's recipes - like Sri Lanka Eggplant Pickles and Italian Pickled Vegetables. Who knows - maybe you'll end up a City Pickler too.
