Nationwide Food Section Roundup: 10.26.06

Pears, pumpkins, and rich fall food dominated newspaper food sections around the country this week, along with the obligatory Halloween ghoulishness.

In Pennsylvania the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette gives a guide to the Chautauqua-Lake Erie wine corridor, and the Philadelphia Daily News offers up Pears: Gems of autumn. From salads to grilled cheese, there's a lot of delicious ideas here.

The Kansas City Star talks about teaching kids to bake, with an easy recipe for moist Chocolate Chip Strawberry Muffins. They follow that with a simple and unusual French chocolate cake. The cake's secret? Yeast.

More pears in Texas, where the Corpus Christi Caller-Times has a luscious Frangipane Tart, prize-winning cheesecakes, and a good use for Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese rind: Harvest Hot-Pot.

In Mississippi the Sun Herald does the pumpkin thing, with pumpkin lattes and cookies. That's followed up by gross-out Halloween treats. Hairball salad and strained eyeballs, dirt cake and yummy mummy, they take their places next to some other things too icky to mention in polite society. Halloween here we come.

I couldn't figure out what recipes from a daily newspaper shouldn't be mentioned in polite society. Then I clicked through and saw the, um. . . kitty . . . cake. Ewwwwwwwwwww. LOL!
