Here's a little taste of what's cooking in newspaper food sections around the country this week. It's still winter, and it's still really cold...
In Massachusetts the Boston Globe has a feature on the food of Almodovar's Volver, budget winter wines, Coq au Vin, and really good Bolognese sauce.
In California the San Francisco Chronicle begins a new vegetarian series called Vegetable Love, kicking it off with recipes for Farro Risotto with Roasted Mushrooms & Chard and Shirred Eggs with Greens & Gruyere. They also have a feature on meat sauces and a review of different brands of cannellini beans.

The Chicago Tribune's Good Eating section owns up to the fact that there is a whole world of pizza beyond deep dish, with a cover story and centerspread on restaurants serving up thin crust and amazing sounding recipes to make your own. About time, I say. Wolfgang Puck weighs in on the subject with a recipe for Spago's smoked salmon pizza, apparently the most popular post-Oscar menu item at his Hollywood restaurant. And wine columnist Bill Daley has an informative piece on pairing wines and seafood.
I love the Boston Globe's Plonk of the Month articles. They always give me good tips on picking out a suitable wine at my usual price range.
All these articles on meat sauces have inspired me to clean out the pantry and the freezer tonight and whip up a pasta dish.
I made the farro risotto from the SF Chronicle article last night (subbed pearl barley and threw chard into pot instead of roasting) and it was very toothsome and good. Thanks for the tip!
