Spoon-Shaped Sugar Cookies for Ice Cream Sundaes

2009_07_31-cookiespoon.jpgA little twist on the old-fashioned wooden ice cream spoons that we used as kids... This image is from Martha Stewart Living, which offers a template for cutting your own spoon shapes with a paring knife. But we found some cookie cutters to help.

These cookie spoons would be a really cute idea for a party (and a nice homemade touch if you're serving store-bought ice cream and toppings). We doubt you can forego real, non-edible spoons entirely, but it would be fun to have a little cookie to scoop up some ice cream.

If you wanted to get fancy, you could pipe people's names onto the handle of the spoons for personalized sundaes.

Here's the original recipe:
Vanilla-Raspberry Sundaes with Spoon-Shaped Cookies, from Martha Stewart Living

If you want to buy a spoon-shaped cookie cutter, rather than free-hand it, we found a couple of sources:

Tennis Racket or Spoon Cookie Cutter, $2.19 at Amazon
Spoon Cookie Cutter, $1.75 at the Cookie Cutter Shop

What do you think? Adorable? Or more trouble than it's worth?

Nice idea but I figure your cookies either have to be super hard or your ice cream super soft. Either way, won't the cookie get soggy and gross after a few scoops?

i made these for our 4th of july bbq. my husband took a heart shaped cookie cutter and refashioned it into a spoon shape. i wasn't about to trace each one off of a paper template. the cookies are really tasty and crisp! they are the perfect sugar cookie. we don't actually use them as spoons, but they are a cute and yummy addition to ice cream or sorbet.
