Just Like Del's? Frosty Frozen Lemonade
Martha Stewart

2009_08_25-frozlemonade.jpgWe should have included this in our roundup of Street Fair Food, because it reminds us of the trademark Del's Frozen Lemonade we see at every outdoor festival and beach boardwalk in the Northeast. This one, though, you can make at home in about two hours.

Of course, Del's Frozen Lemonade is usually pretty soft; this looks like it's scoopable. But something this light, icy, and tart sounds about as refreshing as it gets on a hot day. Plus, it's not just pure lemonade. There's a little fresh-squeezed orange juice, lemongrass, and honey in there—delicious.

The process is similar to the way you make a granita. You freeze the juice in a shallow pan and loosen it with a fork after about an hour or two. But instead of stopping there, you put the frozen juice in a food processor to get it extra smooth.

We actually think that could be a good tip for any granita. The effect looks almost like sorbet.

Thank you for posting this! I adore Del's Frozen Lemonade. Now my hubby will be happy he can make it himself :0)

Talk about some weird synchronicity. I just figured out my own recipe for some just-like-Del's lemonade the other day. My recipe is straightforward (water, lemon juice, lemon zest, and sugar), and my technique is to just stick it in my ice cream maker for about 10 minutes -- just until its the right slushy consistency.

Frozen lemonades are lovely. I love the Indian mocktails also.

Thanks, Peter! The recipe and lemonade looks really good...I'm glad you were sure to add in the lemon zest, that's my favorite part of a Del's! Oh, and I like your Smuttynose glass too ;).

Mmmm, Del's.... The best part of visiting my brother in Rhode Island (aside from seeing him, of course!).
