Bold Wallpaper for a Famous NYC Cookie Baker

We love how this kitchen has clean, crisp modern touches right alongside some really traditional elements—the toile-like wallpaper and the wooden cabinet (maybe it's antique?) tucked into the far right corner. It belongs to a woman who's known for her fancy, iced-to-perfection cookies in every shape, size, and character. Know who it is?

It's Eleni Gianopulos, the owner of Eleni's New York cookies, which are sold at the store in Chelsea Market and shipped all over the country.

Because she's an avid baker, Eleni wanted an electric oven (she says it cooks much more evenly than gas) and a marble countertop for rolling out dough. Her husband wanted a different oven and lots of stainless steel.

We love how the modern stainless steel and lucite chairs work so well with the country-esque vibe of the rest of the room. And that wallpaper is just stunning. It's expensive, of course, but if you have a really small kitchen, maybe you could splurge on one thing to add a huge burst of color and pattern.

wallpaper looks like Clarence House vases...great paper and is expensive but worth the money for that wow factor.

I'm having a hard time reconciling the dueling concepts of a professional kitchen and wallpaper (unless that wallpaper is washable, which is not mentioned in the article, unless I missed it).

That said, the look is interesting. I like how the couple compromised on their competing preferences re ovens and countertops, by including the wants of each. (And I've heard many pro cooks say that a gas range plus an electric oven = the best combo.) The antique cabinet is a nice touch, also, as is the mellowed hardwood floor.

Mirandabee-- according to the nymag article, this is her kitchen at home, not her bakery kitchen.

"Professional kitchen" vs "home kitchen of a professional cook." OK, I take your point, and it's valid. I still don't like wallpaper in the kitchen -- or most anywhere else. As noted, though, I do find much to admire here otherwise. :-)
