Top Chef: Episode 1

2007_06_15_topchef-infraredherring.jpgYou told us Top Chef is your favorite food reality show. What did you think of the first episode? The discussion and the spoilers start after the jump ...

Also, Kitchen reader and food blogger Samantha from Infraredhering hit the Top Chef Season 3 Kick Off and posted this report on New York City's Top Chef Fever. (Thanks for the photo, Samantha)

What did you think of the first episode? Overall, this looks like a talented bunch of contestants. We really liked Micah's Tuscan twist on sushi during the Quickfire. Chowhounders loved the exotic ingredients, but admit we lost interest in all that ostrich and rattlesnake by the end of the episode. Clay's departure felt inevitable. Too bad, since we'd like to see more self-taught cooks represent in these shows.

Blogging Top Chef wants to know what amuse bouche you'd create to represent your personality. What would it be?

Tre, the winner of the first episode final challenge, is actually also self-taught, no formal culinary education.
