Good Eats: Silly SmartShopper

20071212-smartshopper.jpgThe SmartShopper is a slim silver gadget that sticks to the fridge. Cooks talk to the $150 tool, telling it what they're out of, and the tool will add it to the printable grocery list.

Serious Eats posted a funny review of the SmartShopper this morning. They don't recommend it. It took one tester six tries to get the thing to add "eggs" to the grocery list. They call it using the tool about "as convenient as teaching a baby to read Tolstoy."

Also, Serious Eats is the East Coast home of the Menu for Hope, an annual food blogger fund raiser for the UN World Food Programme. Please consider making a donation and buying a virtual raffle ticket. Here at The Kitchn, we're offering a big baking prize.

Ok, I'm generally anti-gadget, but here's what I want:

A device that
1) attaches to my fridge
2) automatically senses when I'm out of a staple and adds that item to my list
3) also responds to voice recognition for items that are not in the fridge or are not staples
4) also has a notepad and stylus for adding items to the list the old fashioned way
5) automatically sorts the list into categories for efficient shopping
6) transmits my list to my cell phone, automatically or in response to a request from the phone
7) allows me to add to my list from phone or email
8) is also capable of printing out a list on paper

I'm discouraged to hear about the failure of the SmartShopper, because I was convinced that my dream gadget was just around the corner. Maybe not. But c'mon, the technology exists, so would someone please hurry up and invent it? And then sell it at a price I could possibly afford?
