Ultra-Light Weight Backpacking Spice Kit from Instructables (via Craftzine)

Essentially, you find a small lightweight container and cut several straws down to a size that will fit. You fold one end of the straw closed, fill it with your spice, close the other end, and voila. A mini-spice kit!

We think this is a great idea not only for camping and backpacking, but also for anytime you're planning on doing some cooking away from home. A little kit like this keeps spices neat and organized, and it allows you the luxury of bringing a variety of spices. If you're flying, though, just make sure nothing looks too suspicious!

Does saying "small lightweight container" mean you aren't allowed to say it's a M&Ms mini container?

Anyway, I can see a problem using tape on straws. When you peel it back, it can tear some and be difficult to close the straw back up. And it seems to defeat the purpose if you have to carry a roll of tape around just for this.

This might be strange but I suggest using a multiday pill box. Like this round stacking version. Just put one spice in each section of the container. Easy to fill, easy to reclose, and easy to pinch out however much you need. And with the one I linked, you can leave off sections, so if you only want salt and pepper, you can just use two sections screwed together.
