San Francisco Market Report: Civic Center Farmer's Market

2008_03_20-CivicCenter6.jpgThe Civic Center Farmer's Market is held every Wednesday from 8 AM to 2 PM on Market Street between 7th and 8th Streets, in the former United Nations Plaza.  Since it's so close to Little Saigon, there are often produce stands selling Southeast Asian vegetables.  There's a seafood truck, and usually another farmer is there selling live chickens, pheasant, and squab.

We saw a lot of winter roots (rutabagas, beets, turnips) and citrus, and we saw the new signs of Spring with the color green prevalent in food everywhere - baby spinach, cilantro, pea shoots, sweet potato leaves, Thai basil, baby broccoli, and salad greens.

2008_03_20-CivicCenter.jpgThe seafood truck was selling fresh spiral whelks, a popular fixture in Asian cuisine.

2008_03_20-CivicCenter3.jpgLemongrass was very cheap - these big bunches were $1 each!  It's a necessary ingredient for curries.

I love this market! It's held on Sundays as well.

"The former United Nations Plaza"? It's still UN Plaza, isn't it? Or was it torn out recently?

@Shawn: I was told it was called that, so maybe my source was wrong ...
