Regional Farmers Market Report: Detroit, Michigan

This Detroit report comes from Sally: The Detroit Eastern Market is an adventure. It is several large tents worth of produce, and an entire perimeter full of restaurants, shops, and entertainment that use the Market as inspiration. The best Eastern Market trip is to go early on a Saturday morning.

The lost time in bed is more than made up for at Russell Street Deli, where you will sit elbow to elbow with other Market lovers, and eat omelets prepared with only the freshest ingredients. Stomach full, you can head out to the tents, where now you will find tomatoes, eggplant, apples, peppers, and a few potatoes.

Sellers are also pushing mums, which if you are looking for something to put in the garden, are a good fall choice.

The beauty of the Eastern Market is that you can do a full grocery run if you want to. Rafal's has any spice, coffee, or tea you could ever need. R. Hirt has cheeses galore, and they can actually tell you about what you are buying. There is a wine shop, a butcher, a fishmonger, and a Greek food seller, and those are just the ones I know about.

If you have been at the market and it is getting toward lunchtime, you can stop by Bert's for some barbeque. If you are feeling brave, you can also sing a little karaoke. In between the produce and shops, are people selling beautiful homemade jewelry and playing music.

During my trip, there were two drummers. One was a colorfully dressed gentleman playing the bongos. The other was a kid madly beating a few empty plastic and metal buckets, and he was amazing. The Eastern Market reminds its visitors that Detroit is still thriving culturally and gastronomically.

EasternMarket is one of the best things about Detroit and I miss it very much. When I was growing up we would go down there and wander around for hours. The fumes from freshly grated horseradish would sting your nose and if lucky a stop at the Rocky Peanut Company for every type of candy and nut under the sun was the highlight.

Detroit Eastern Market goers should have a meet-up sometime and share our finds! Maybe breakfast at russell street if it's only a few.
