Regional Farmers Market Report: Baltimore, Maryland

From Rachel in Baltimore: Of the seven farmers markets we have in Baltimore, only the largest has the unique distinction of being located both underneath a major highway and just a few blocks from the Supermax prison. But don't let the less than bucolic setting scare you away; it is the best place in the Baltimore area to go for fresh and organic produce from rural Maryland and Pennsylvania.

It is open yearly from early May to late December and draws almost 8,000 visitors every Sunday morning. Many of the stands sell exclusively organic produce ranging from tomatoes to beans to salad greens. A handful of the stands, including the Cat's Paw Organic Farm of Union Bridge, MD sell baked goods like muffins, breads and cookies, all made with organic, local ingredients.

This past weekend, Reid's Orchards of Pennsylvania had a stunning display of heirloom apples and pears for sale, along with several varieties of apple and pear ciders. At only $1.49 a pound, it was hard to resist picking up a mixture of some of my favorite apples; the honeycrisp, fameuse snow apple, and smokehouse varieties.

In addition to all of the wonderful produce, offerings include local favorite Zeke's coffee, dog treats from the Baltimore Dog Bakery, The Hen's Nest's free range eggs and poultry, Neopol Smokery's smoked meats and fish, local meats, dairy products, honey, and unique to Baltimore: locally caught blue crabs and fish.

In season: dozens of heirloom varieties of apples and pears, fresh herbs, cabbage, pumpkins, blue crabs, kale, onions, green beans, wax beans potatoes, fresh beans, black eyed peas, radishes, mushrooms, squash and late season corn, peaches, tomatoes, and berries.
