What's Cooking This Weekend...
Weekend of June 14-15, 2008

2008_06_13-Stew.jpgWe are following in the footsteps of readers Orchid64 and Aldyth, who are both using the slow cooker to make a weekend meal. The slow cooker is such a great tool year-round; in the heat it's ideal because it doesn't make your kitchen any hotter. We're cooking up a fresh springtime stew with plenty of snow peas and bright vegetables. More ideas for cool springtime cooking below...

• Stay cool! Make popsicles and the right ice for your drinks.

• See some friends and have some good conversation food.

Coconut jam! We already have a plot for this baking in the oven...

• Have you told us about your worst kitchen injury yet?

• Don't forget - garlic scapes are in season - get them while they last.

Have you tried whole wheat pasta lately?

• Here are some refreshing cocktails to go along with that ice.

• And if your kitchen's cool enough, make a pie!

Edible flowers - so lovely and delicious.

• And finally, what are you doing for Father's Day this weekend?

Those are just a few good weekend cooking ideas - what are you eating (and drinking) this weekend?

Never in a million years would I have thought that I'd be saying this, but what's cooking this weekend is tornado clean-up in our community. We are thankful that our loss only amounted to broken car windows, but many others were not as fortunate, so it's time to dish out some elbow grease.

I used a slow cooker for the first time last weekend (All-Clad 7 qt). I made pulled pork bbq for a family get-together. I put everything in the cooker at 10 pm and at 6am it was done. The cooker kept the pork warm until 10 am. I took the pork out, shredded it and put it back in the cooker to reheat. At noon we were all at the picnic table eating. The slow cooker experience was great. I slept while I was cooking and the kitchen stayed cool during a brutal 98 degree weekend.

I was at the grocery store yesterday thinking about what I could cook in my crock pot during the summer. For me, the crock pot makes great wintery food --hearty stews and soups. Does anyone have suggestions for summer crock pot recipes?
