What's Cooking This Weekend?
Weekend of May 9-10, 2009

What's cooking this weekend? Looking for a quick weekend treat, inspiration for a Mother's Day meal, or a new recipe to try? Start here — there is plenty of good cooking, eating, and drinking from the last week, plus some kitchen inspiration and eye candy for lazy weekend browsing.

The image above is from our visit to food writer Julie Van Rosendaal's kitchen.

• Mother's Day: Brunch cocktails, hibiscus mimosa, care packages, chocolate strawberry candies, and a dinner menu.

• The Kitchen Cure assignment for week #4 - Over halfway there now!

• An odd mystery stringed gadget

• Crunch! Broccoli slaw, asparagus, pickles, weird celery, and sweet potato chips.

• Weekend treats with lemon and chocolate: cake with walnuts (and aforementioned ingredients) plus hot, gooey ice cream sandwiches. Oh, and how about in banana cake too!

• Reuse and recycle: yogurt containers and soda bottles.

• A great book on cooking with kids.

• Would you like to be a guest on The Kitchn?

• Lovely kitchens: TINY yet beautiful, Julie's cozy abode, gorgeous greys. Tom Colicchio, on the other hand, has a very ordinary kitchen.

• Have you ever seen arugula blossoms?

Have a wonderful weekend!

This weekend is going to be strawberry jam and canning. The poor things have been in my freezer for long enough, it's time they got their due.

Cake is also sounding lovely, or maybe marmalade. Can one make lemon marmalade?

Hubby and I are cashing in on a wedding gift, a chef is coming over and teaching us how to make some quick weeknight suppers:
Steak with Red Wine-Shallot Pan Sauce
Pan-Roasted Cod with Lemon-Caper Butter
Roasted Lemon-Rosemary Chicken
Garlicky Broccoli Rabe and Chickpeas
I've nailed most things on the list independently but hopefully it will inspire my other half. Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies!

two more things:

1. I'm really excited to be using demi glace for the steak recipe as I've never used it before.

2. That Amana ad on the homepage is unbearably annoying..but i guess that's the point isn't it!

Sure you can make lemon marmalade! Or mixed fruit, if you prefer. Or you could make lemon curd.

For me it's dolmas this weekend. I already made tabbouleh to cull off the parsley before the hot season begins.

We're also going out to a new Japanese place for Mother's Day with the in-laws.

Tonight were trying out a recipe from Epicurious for skirt steak with shallots, greens and goat cheese that specifies using the broiler for the steak.

I'm trying to find a great, easy, relatively inexpensive steak meal that doesn't necessitate the use of a grill.

This afternoon I started a brioche for breakfast tomorrow morning. Also I have some languishing shredded cabbage, tofu, egg roll wrappers, etc in the fridge so I should make some vegetarian egg rolls for the freezer.

And we're picking up our first CSA box on Sunday!!! We split it with a friend and just alternate weeks; he got the first one last week and notified us of lots of strawberries and mustard greens. Mustard greens! That's going to be an adventure.

sdnyc- totally agree about the amana ad! I finally found the dang close thingy. I was about to give up on coming to this site.

On the menu for the weekend- devil's food cupcakes with ganache frosting for my 3 year old boy's bday tomorrow. Lemon waffles for the breakfast & good old burgers on the grill for dinner. Sunday we hope to make some easy yummy sandwiches for a picnic at the arboretum where lilacs are in full bloom. Thanks to Trader Joe's for good sandwich fixins.

I recently moved to Tokyo. I'm learning about new types of veggies and stuff, so today I will be experimenting with chingensai, some type of Chinese cabbage? Spinach? Not really sure, but I picked it up at the farm stand for cheap, so I'm excited.

Well, I just tried making corn muffins. Not bad, but not satisfied yet, so I'm going to have to play with the recipe. I want sweet ones that don't taste too much of cornmeal.

Tried my hand at rhubarb muffins made with whole wheat pastry flour and a bit of almond meal, but I think I overdid it on the fruit. Delicious, but so full of rhubarb they didn't really rise...

Oh, my mom used to have measuring cups just like those! *fond sigh*

I made croissants this weekend! I'm so proud - they were amazing!
