What's Cooking This Weekend?
Weekend of August 15-16, 2009

2009_08_14-Cupcake.jpgWhat's cooking this weekend, folks? If you need some inspiration, or just some light weekend reading, here's a rundown of The Kitchn's past week. Fair food recipes, icy cocktails (lots of watermelon!), some beautiful kitchen designs, and good summer cooking tips below!

• New recipes and recipe reviews: Blueberry oat quick bread, grilled zucchini and tomato salad, homemade mayonnaise, and white fish and citrus salad with garlic fries.

Seven more recipes for fair food, including lemon shake ups, funnel cakes, corndogs, fried Oreos and Twinkies, nachos, roasted sweet corn, and ice cream sandwiches.

• And here's a whole other list of the drink recipes published this week; there were so many! Watermelon tarragon fizz, whiskey smash cocktail, gin gimlets, frozen watermelon margarita, aguas frescas, and lemon shake ups, fair-style.

• New kitchen tours and spotlights: $30 kitchen makeover (also, does does your kitchen need a makeover?) and a tour of Delancey, Orangette's new pizzeria in Seattle (gorgeous lighting design!).

• Interesting products: 5 lovely spice jar sets, Little Snowie snowcone maker, the perfect trash can, kitchen linens inspired by Julia Child's book covers, and cute salt pigs.

• In season: hot chili peppers, fresh fruit, blueberries, sweet corn, eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes.

• Kitchen design ideas: Pot filler faucet discussion, wire shelving for the countertop, and how to sew your own napkins and table runner.

• Are you a foodie, or a cook?

• How to use up leftover bagels and leftover cupcakes.

• How to bake bread on the stovetop.

• Party ideas for young pirates and the freshly laid-off.

• The Top Chef discussion thread returns!

• What food or drink do you wish you enjoyed more?

• Hot weather relief: frozen grapes, watermelon mojitos, and grilling indoors.

• Foods you should try: kudzu, plus twelve others you should try at least once.

Have a great weekend! Don't forget to stop by tomorrow to see the hottest posts published in the last week, and on Sunday for Dana's Weekend Meditation.

Tomorrow is Julia Child's birthday!!!! I just found thekitchn's sole meuniere post, so I think that's a project/subject worthy of an inaugural post on my soon-to-be blog!!!

Also, there's a new farmer's market opening up in Nashville tomorrow (Richland Park, for you West Nashvillians) so I'm very excited for that.

I snagged 20 pounds of fresh, local Texas pears from a colleague.... so I think I'll be making gingered pear marmalade and old-fashioned spiced pear butter. And then

We'll be on the road this weekend traveling to an out of town wedding some 3 hours away so unfortunately, I won't be doing much cooking. Looking forward to getting into the kitchen once we come home on Sunday.

Since I didn't get invited over for a cupcake, I will tell you what I made for lunch instead. All local ingredients except for the salt, pepper, and olive oil.

Sourdough bread topped with sauteed swiss chard, a bit of cream in the chard. A tiny bit of left over smoked haddock in small pieces on top, with a poached egg. And all I can tell you is YUM. I think probably even better than a cupcake...

I'm trying a new recipe for lamb shawarma tonight; lamb is marinating, and I'll make some pita later on. Trying to decide between a maple sheet cake or a lemon bundt cake for dessert. I've got preserved lemons started, bread rising, and I've got to make a potato salad for a potluck tomorrow. Busy cooking weekend--just how I like it. :-)

I made a chicken tagine with green olives and preserved lemons. Unfortunately, wound up putting waaaaay too much harissa (no way will the kids eat it), and in my attempts to "fix" things, I overcooked the preserved lemon ( I tried throwing in sweet potatoes to suck up some of the sauce, and lessen the heat with their carbs), and it went bitter on me.

Eh well, that's how it goes sometime. It is still pretty good.

Last night I started a batch of strawberry vinegar from Miss Beecher's Domestic Receipt Book (1858).

The name is deceiving, as what you really end up with is a concentrated syrup for non-alcoholic shrub. Very refreshing, the vinegar just comes through as a bit of a 'zing.'

Oh, I envy you all! My kitchen is in shambles as I am knee deep in a renovation. The city has condemned by 40 yr old stove and I haven't yet figured out how to operate my 40 yr old oven. I don't have any kitchen supplies even here yet. I can't wait to start cooking again. Lift a pot for me!

just started my first batch of fermented pickles.
gallon glass jar, drilled a hole in the cap and stuck an airlock in it to keep any nastyness out.
filled it with 4 pounds of kirbies, garlic, peppercorns, dill, 8 tbsp kosher salt and 2 quarts of water.
hopefully I will have sour pickles in about 4 weeks!

Threw together a birthday cake (classic yellow bundt) with chocolate glaze for my Mom's birthday. Made possible by a Betty Crocker cookbook from circa 1968, which my sister-in-law and I were calling The Oracle. For cakes and cookies, absolutely. Most of it was scary, but the cakes are always perfect.

I'm still really no ace at frosting. That was a new year's resolution. The icing was...ok.

A friend brought some Okanagan Peaches and Apricots with her on a visit and I made some basic Apricot and Peach jam (seperate, not together). They turned out very sweet so I'm going to do some Raspberry sugar free jam next.

I also made a big batch of Jalapeno Jelly. It is super spicy!! I love it. I refrained from adding too much green food colouring and the result is a very nice muddy green. I love it. I'm going to be spreading that on some crackers later!

I also roasted a chicken on Friday night and served up some Garden potatoes, zucchini, and Swiss Chard with it. It's awesome when an entire meal is all garden produce except for the meat. Yum Yum Harvest!
