We're still pulling a few ripe red tomatoes off our cherry tomato bush, but there are plenty of green globes that probably won't ripen before the weather turns colder. The good news is that green tomatoes are still edible, delicious, and good for so many things!
We ran a contest this time last year that asked for your best green tomato recipes. Here are the results! These were our finalists and winner.
• Eggs Benedict with Green Tomatoes - The winner! This is a simple use for green tomatoes - tart and fresh under eggs.
• Curried Green Tomatoes - This easy, spicy soup would be great served over rice. We may use our small green tomatoes in a dish like this.
• Green Tomato Chutney - Spicy green tomatoes! A recipe from England via Russia.
• Green Tomatoes and Aceto Balsamico Jam - Here is another preserved green tomato recipe - sweet and savory jam. Sanja lives in Croatia; this turned out to be a very international contest.
• Roasted Poblano Pepper & Green Tomato Chili - Rachel's recipe looks both warm and refreshing.
• Green Tomato and Lentil Stew - This is an adaptation of a South Indian lentil dish.
Do you ever cook with green tomatoes? Do you have any favorite uses for them?

Actually they will ripen off the vine. I put about 40 green tomatoes with a few red ones in a paper bag two weeks ago in a dark cool part of the kitchen (under the dining table) and now they are ALL red!!

Like sassy, I also ripen tomatoes off the vine. I put them in a box...slightly larger than the crop... shoulders down. This really only works if the tomato is almost fully grown... just green. They won't grow larger or get more mature but they sure do taste great! I thought I picked RED brandywines but I must have picked YELLOW brandywines instead. They were a lovely surprise.

... oh, and my yellow plum tomatoes also ripened the same way. They seem to have softer flesh and a few went bad but all-in-all... it was worth it. We were moving and I didn't want to lose them.

Late to the party on this, but I met a woman several years back who told me that while growing up on a farm, they would make green tomato pie.
Basically they substituted green tomatoes for apples and made apple pie filling. She said the flavour was just like apple pie, despite the total lack of apples.

I like to make this easy, salsa-like (no sugar!) green tomato relish. In fact I see a batch in my very near future since it's probably going to dip down into the low 30s (or lower) tonight. I love October on the farm, but I'm already missing my vine-ripened tomatoes! :)
