When I was small, I bought a pack of mesclun mix seeds and nursed them until they were honest-to-gosh salad greens. I was so proud that I wrote a letter to my grandmother about it.
She called my mom and demanded to know why they were letting me grow drugs in the back yard.
"Mesclun," my mom said, shaking with laughter, "not mescalin. Lettuce, Mother."
They were delicious, even if they didn't get me high.
