Recipe Roundup: Homemade Pet Treats

2008_09_16-dogtreat.jpgIt's Pet Design Month over at our AT home sites, so we thought we'd throw a little Kitchn love out to the four-legged crowd. If we're going to celebrate healthy home cooking in September, who's to say dogs and cats can't be part of it? Get recipes, below...

With pet food recalls on the rise (there was another yesterday), it does make sense that homemade pet food—made with animal-friendly ingredients—is safer. That is, if you have the time to be making from-scratch food for your cat or dog. Maybe start with a special occasion dog biscuit and see how it goes.

If you bake for your pets or refer to them as "children" then someone needs to slap you.

Well, slap me and call me Sally! My fur-babies love their home-made peanut butter treats.

:^)

What an incredibly rude and ignorant thing to say, protogarrett.

Thanks for posting these. I'm a huge believer in feeding dogs as natural diet as possible.

I do indeed cook and bake for my dogs, and don't appreciate protogarrett's comment. I can't/won't have children due to progessive illness and my pets have been there for me in moments few humans could understand.

Perhaps you need someone in your life who will unconditionally love you?

I once made cookies for my neighbors for Christmas. Since they all had dogs, I included some homemade dog biscuits shaped like bones. A few days later one of my neighbors thanked me for the cookies saying how much she enjoyed them even the one that wasn't sweet (though she looked very confused when she said it). I didn't have the heart to tell her.

twosavoie, that's hilarious!
I realize I'm a little late on this post but has anyone tried making dog treats similar to those dried-out sweet potato spears? My dog is allergic to wheat - among many other things - so I buy those for him, but they are stupid-expensive and I'd like to try making them myself. I am thinking of just baking sweet potato pieces in a very low temp. oven for a few hours until they look dried-out and chewy.
