Spam, sushi and the White House don't scream "Midwest," but this week's food sections are abuzz with inauguration menus and recipes to celebrate the former senator from Illinois' inauguration as the 44th president of the United States. The food, of course, matches the president elect's eclectic background.
- The Chicago Tribune puts together a "party of global proportions" with nods to Obama's time spent in Chicago, Hawaii, Indonesia, New York, and Cambridge, Mass., and ties to Kansas and Kenya. Dishes include Spam Musubi, Lemongrass Chicken Satay and Kenyan Mashed Corn and Beans.
- The Tribune takes Obama pride one step further with a cocktail called the Hometown Hero.
- The Tribune's Bill Daley also has wine suggestions for the president himself. Mostly domestic, of course.
- The Chicago Sun-Times gets former White House chefs to dish about their most powerful clients. Walter Scheib said President Clinton loved dessert despite being allergic to chocolate, dairy and flour. Puffy eyes were a sign that he'd indulged.
- Scheib also shares his most requested dish from his years in the White House: Gratineed Parmesan Bites.
- The Sun-Times has the menu for the official Inaugural Luncheon, a somewhat modest and recession-appropriate offering of seafood stew, brace of American birds with sour cherry chutney and molasses sweet potatoes, and apple cinnamon sponge cake with sweet cream glacee.

I've got to figure out something to make for our Hawaiian-themed pot luck on inauguration day.

All politics aside, I love Obama for inspiring an interest in food from so many different places.

you can do a teriyaki chicken...or an assortment of musubis like egg, hotdog, spam, etc....

I... didn't know you could do that with Spam. The lemongrass chicken and Kenyan dish sound tasty, though, as does the official luncheon.
Poor Clinton. I think I'd die if I had those allergies.
