Porridge for Breakfast: 5 Hot Cereals To Fill You Up

Mush, gruel, hot cereal — none of the names for this genre of breakfast dishes is very appealing. But that's OK; we all know the truth. Warm, creamy polenta, or nutty, pearly oats — they're a wonderful way to start the morning. From Cream of Wheat to oatmeal, here's a look at some of our favorite ways to eat hot cereal for breakfast.

Here are some of the hot cereals that we love to eat in the morning. What are yours?

Oatmeal - Ah the classic. We love oats in all forms, but our favorite has to be steel cut oats. Our foolproof method for cooking oatmeal is to bring about 4 cups of water to boil with a cup of steel cut oats, then turn off the heat and cover the pot. We leave it to sit all night, then warm it up in the morning for instant pearly oatmeal. It's satisfying and totally delicious.

Polenta (or grits) - Warm, creamy polenta with a drizzle of maple syrup is a wonderful morning breakfast. Or you can eat grits Southern-style with just some pepper or maybe a little cheese.

Cream of Wheat - This wheat farina dish is total nursery food for many of us. We like to jazz it up a bit with a cooked egg yolk and a little sugar and nutmeg for a breakfast pudding that's really irresistible. It keeps your tummy warm!

Rice - Leftover rice, warmed up with cinnamon and milk, makes a great quick hot cereal. We warm it up in the microwave and splash on some milk and a half teaspoon of sugar.

Quinoa - Quinoa's nutty, wholesome goodness makes it a natural addition to the hot cereal brigade. We love it with honey!

What's your favorite hot cereal, and your favorite way to eat it?

I want to like oatmeal but the look and texture just turn me off.

I grew up on Cream of Wheat and grits. I can only eat grits the way my mother always served it when I was a child: with butter, salt and pepper and a side of sausage.

I love oatmeal. I make it with milk, in my crock pot, then serve it with brown sugar in the morning.

My fiance likes Savory Cereal, a dish served at the local Siddah Yoga Ashram, that he grew up eating. It's quite good, though really odd (to me). http://food.sulekha.com/a-recipe-id21225-18548-recipe.htm If you're curious.

I like oatmeal too but the timing has always been too hard to go the full steel cut route. That said Trader Joe's has some microwaveable stuff that tastes pretty good and has the desired effect. Of course I sprinkle in dried berries for flavor too...

sayonara, I make a big pot of steel cut oats on Sunday and then reheat a single serving each day during the week. It keeps really well in the fridge and is very quick to reheat.

Steel cut oats cook up very nicely in fuzzy-logic rice cookers (I have a zojirushi) I dump everything in the night before, and set the timer for when I want it to be ready when I wake up. I usually make it with a diced apple and cinnamon. The best part--no stirring!!

No matter how I try I can't make myself like oatmeal...

However I adore Cream of Wheat and have it for breakfast often. I love Malt O Meal hot cereal too but I can't get it up here in Canada

I love all hot cereals. Here's the fastest one I know: couscous! With warm milk, cinnamon, and walnuts. Whole wheat couscous is the best this way.

Ditto, cmcinnyc - hot cereals are yummy! And couscous with a little milk, honey, and cinnamon is delicious and fast. I also love oat bran with honey. It cooks up fast (3-4 minutes) and has a lovely nutty flavor that's also wonderful with honey.

I love to mix them up and cook them together in milk...cream of wheat and rolled barley flakes, oatmeal in cream of rice, cream of rice and wheat together. Add a few egg whites, salt, pepper and breakfast is on. A warm bowl of cereal will last all morning and hold through my swimming too.

Had oatmeal this morning! The quick-cooking version of McCann's Irish oats is really good and easy, 5 minutes or less. I like it pretty runny so it doesn't get gluey when it cools, so I do a slightly higher ratio of milk/water to oats. I threw in some diced apple in the last couple minutes of cooking, plus cinnamon. Then ate it topped with lots of brown sugar and half-and-half. Yum.

Also love Cream of Wheat, but don't find it substantial enough for breakfast. I tend to crave it as a "light" dessert in the evenings, with maple syrup.

Malt-o-meal is my favorite! I like oatmeal too, but I think it's better with just brown sugar, maybe some pecans.

I want to try the oatmeal in a rice cooker thing, but I just don't ever eat breakfast. (Combination of not being awake and not wanting to eat that soon after waking up.)

I've been digging the Bob's Red Mill 10-grain cereal. There's a 6 grain and 7 grain I think too.

I grew up on Cream of Wheat. My mom was always so careful to stir it constantly to make sure there were no lumps in it. :)

Frankly, I haven't met a hot cereal I don't like. I'm going to have to try that overnight steel cut oats method. :) Tried the slow cooker but mine has hot spots (yes, my slow cooker somewhat sucks if I can't stir things) so it burned in places.

Southern style grits! Cooked until they're thick and creamy, then serve them with butter, salt, pepper and topped with a fried egg. It's totally comfort food for me.

I cook yellow grits and steel cut oatmeal in my rice cooker and they come out great without a lot of stirring and watching over. Another grain I love for breakfast is barley...not the pearl type, but the whole grain type. This I cook overnight in a crock pot (2-to-1 ratio water to grain), then add honey to taste. Very simple but very tasty with a wonderful texture. Sometimes I top the honeyed barley with dried fruit and plain yogurt.

mmm. breakfast cereals. thanks so much for the tip on the overnight cooking! i'll give that a go this evening.
real grits are amazing. i plump mine up with a bit of cream in the beginning and cook them 'til they're thick, then bake the leftovers to use with shrimp. for rolled oats, i love putting in ripe pears, dried prunes and cinnamon while it's cooking, and topping it with sorghum or honey and cream or yogurt. nothing makes me more ready to face a grey day.

I love oatmeal but my kids won't eat it. Another great breakfast idea is pancakes with fresh fruit...when i have the time i make them from scratch but otherwise i use organic batter blaster from a spray bottle. It's the easiest way i can get my kids to eat fruit.
