Eggs Benedict and Beyond

2008_10_06-EggsBenedict.jpgOver the weekend, I visited Portland, Oregon. One morning at a local brunch place, I ordered an Eggs Benedict-type dish, but instead of Canadian bacon, it had smoked salmon. It was delicious, and I wondered, what are other variations of Eggs Benedict?

I've had a delicious take on Eggs Benny that was a Mexican-spiced crab cake served with egg on top and a chipotle flavored Mexican crema sauce on top. It was absolutely to die for! I believe I first had it at Rosa Mexicana and I order it any time I see it on a brunch menu.

I've had Eggs Benny with grilled asparagus and proscuto (sp?). It was salty and delicious. Yum!

The slightly-Cajun inspired (but also just plain Parisian, with a lovely pastry selection) Parish in Atlanta adds crayfish to their eggs Benedict - all their brunch dishes pretty much have a seafood or fish element. Slightly odd, but I think it paid off.

About 6 years ago I had the same exact thing in Boca Raton - eggs benedict with smoked salmon instead of canadian bacon. It was so good... I so wanted to find a place that had this. Thankfully I found a place in Montauk that made something similar. Too bad its essentially at the end of the earth :(

The closest I ever came to making something similar on my own was this:

And no, its not very similar at all :(

the to-die-for spot Ravenous (Healdsburg, CA) does a killer brunch menu with a smoked salmon/goat cheese/avocado omelet benedict type thing. I can't stand most preparation of eggs benedict, but this deconstructed version was great!

If you're ever at Treasure Island in Las Vegas, they make an awesome Filet Mignon Benedict in their restaurant "The Coffee Shop." I ate it every day it was so good.

Eggs Blackstone sounds tasty too. Eggs Benedict is by far my favorite breakfast!

Northwest eggs benedict (the kind with smoked salmon instead of Canadian bacon) is pretty common up here in Seattle too, and another great regional variation has dungeness crab instead of bacon. I don't eat mammals, but I love poached eggs and hollandaise, so I think these seafood variations are divine!

It's pretty easy to find eggs benedict with smoked salmon in northern California and the northwest, I feel spoiled! Fried Green Tomato Benedict sounds amazing though, I'll definitely have to try it!

I still have dreams about the "huevos benedicto" on the brunch menu at Coobah in Chicago: poached eggs with chipotle crab cakes and creamy avocado on Columbian "arepa" corn cakes with honey lime-chile hollandaise and roasted red chile potatoes. Makes me wish I didn't move.

I'm hooked on spinach and tomato eggs benedict ever since friends took us to Bristol Square Cafe in Walpole, MA.

Brennan's in the French Quarter has several variations on this dish. "Eggs Owen" is my favorite:

I had a few really strange Benedicts in Anchorage, Alaska:

The "Rainster" at City Diner. Instead of an English muffin, they use French toast. I was only able to eat half.
"Los Benny Ortega" at Cafe Croissant. Green chile, chorizo, and a croissant.

No one has mentioned what is the most famous variant of Eggs Benny--the Egg McMuffin!

There is a place out here in LA that serves an Eggs Benny with smoked salmon, a perfectly poached egg, on a latke (a potato pancake) and of course Hollandaise done with lots of lemon instead of vinegar.

It's frickin amazing.

My husband and I have breakfast once a week at our local diner. They do a different benny variation each week. Two of my favorites are the Italian (with homemade italian sausage, fresh mozzarella, poached eggs, and sun dried tomato hollandaise on italian toast) and the BLT (tomato, and poached, with bacon leek hollandaise). Their different takes on hollandaise are what keep the dishes so interesting and delicious.

There's a great article about Eggs Benedict and all its cousins in the recent breakfast-themed issue of Saveur - it's great!

I've had vegetarian style eggs benedict from several places, replacing the canadian bacon with a slice of tomato. In New Orleans, the Panola Street Cafe has an awesome version of benedict with avocado.
