Do You Own a Bread Machine?

2008_07_09-BreadMachine.jpgA better question might actually be, if you own one, do you actually use it?!

The shot above is our neglected bread machine (note the fine coating of dust). Since getting into artisan bread baking a few years back, we used it less and less until...well, we can't remember the last time we used it.

But it's hot and humid in Boston this week. And we've become accustomed to fresh bread. And in this heat and humidity, the idea of turning on the oven makes us break out in preemptive sweat.

So...should we haul out our old bread machine?

Part of the reason we abandoned our bread machine was the lack of quality. Once we started baking our own, there just wasn't any contest.

And then, of course, the no-knead bread and "artisan bread in five minutes" phenomenons hit, giving us the best of both worlds.

But perhaps there's still a time and a place for the bread machine?

A quick internet search revealed several intriguing recipes:

Fresh Rosemary Bread
Hawaiian Sweet Bread
Steakhouse Wheat Bread
Black Forest Pumpernickel
Blue Cheese and Walnut Bread

We even found a recipe for Ricotta Bread--it would be interesting to see how it compares to our artisan Ricotta Bread!

Are you using your bread machine? If so, what are your favorite recipes?

I haven't used mine in years. I got in the habit of making my own oatmeal bread every Sunday, and my breadmaker essentially got put out to pasture. I might break it out for old time's sake, though, and give one of those recipes a try. I'm a sucker for Hawaiian Sweet Bread.

I use mine weekly and love it. I have terrible luck making my own breads, but want to eat something yummy, so I make a potato bread recipe. My model is a panasonic (off amazon for $120) and I use it every Sunday afternoon.

I have a bread machine that I used to use weekly -- but only on the "dough" cycle. I take the bread out before the last rising so I can shape it into a baguette.

The past couple of times, though, the bread hasn't been very good -- it hasn't risen enough. I don't know if it's a problem with the bread maker (it's a Sunbeam, about a year old) or with the weather (hot and humid South).

I'm going to try making it all myself and see if I can get the hang of it.

I use my bread machine when I decide in the morning that I want fresh pizza dough ready for me when I get home from work that night, and when I want fresh and warm bread ready when I wake up in the morning. Waking up to the smell of maple syrup bread (which is then thickly sliced and used for french toast) in the morning is WONDERFUL!

Like others above, I use my machine but only for making dough. Of late, mine's been consigned to the bottom shelf of the hall closet, as I've been using the no knead method or a stand mixer. My first attempt at making yeast bread was with a machine and I'm grateful to it for dispelling the whole mystique of yeast baking for me. Success with the machine gave me the confidence to try bread making by hand or with a stand mixer. I notice that my local thrift store always seems to have a plentiful supply of used bread machines - I guess the high point of their popularity has passed ?

I got the one my parents no longer used but the thing was so noisy and had a tendency to burn the top crust. I gave it to a neighbor. I too was experiencing summertime withdrawl from the 5 minute a day bread but it does pass.

My bread machine broke and so I did the artisan bread thing for a couple of months. The heat was really getting to me though so I finally went to the store and picked up a bread machine. We had bread last night without heating my house up to a zillion degrees and it turned out great (the recipe I made was posted today along with a recipe for Honey Butter to spread on top. It was delicious!)

No bread machine.

I use Lodge dutch oven for breads, though i'd love a Le Creuset one...but not $300 lying around for it either.

No. I borrowed a bread machine for a few months some years ago and the product it produces just can't compare to what I make with my trusty bread bowl and wooden spoon.

I use my bread machine all of the time; mostly for dough (pizza and calzones), but also for a variety of breads. I have a friend who has the same model Zojirushi machine that I have and he makes incredible breads using wheat he has ground himself plus all sorts of seeds, nuts, herbs, cheeses, fruits and chocolate (not all in the same loaf!); truly incredible stuff. I keep meaning to make the non-machine variety breads, but the stuff out of the Zo is so fantastic I'm not in any hurry to break out of my rut.

I actually have the very bread machine in your photograph!

We got it when my partner's grandmother moved into a smaller space and was de-stashing. I use it almost exclusively on the dough setting as I find the bread setting produces too dense and too cube-like a bread. Also, it's kind of fun to get a long rope of dough and braid it for a final rising. I'll go through phases were I'll use it a lot, then phases where I don't. I suspect this is mostly because I don't have room for it in my (small) kitchen and therefore have to drudge it up from the basement.

I still use my bread machine. I have had it for about 8 years. I also only use the dough cycle and pull the dough out and shape it then bake it in the oven. It's great for pizza dough too.

i also have the same one as in the photograph! we use it to make pizza dough mostly. i'm sort of lazy about thinking ahead so we only make bread when i'm particularly on the ball. in this heat, no thanks, but once fall comes around, i will probably make at least one loaf a week in the bread machine. it's better than no homemade bread!

I have an Oster bread machine which I have used every week (sometimes once, sometimes twice) for the past 7 years. I make low carb/high protein bread for my husband and it turns out beautifully. I also use it to make pizza dough.

I think bread machine baking is as much an art as making it by hand. The main problem is that people just expect to toss everything in and get the same result as doing it by hand, but it helps to know what the settings are, how to modify recipes, and to know the strong and weak points of the machine you're using.

It amazes me that people will study and perfect hand made bread, but don't even read the manuals that came with their bread machines and abandon their machines when the first few loaves fail to 'wow' them.

I was just in Goodwill yesterday (looking for a lampshade to revamp DIY) and there was an entire aisle FILLED with nothing but bread machines!

I have a bread machine that I use often during the cooler months to make Cinnamon Raisin Bread. I slice off an inch think piece and toast it up at work, often making the office very jealous. I also use it for pizza and cinnamon bun dough. I like the fact I can just load it up and continue on with my day.

It had been so long since I used my bread machine that I moved the giant thing off my counter. I much prefer the no knead bread so I just do that now. Also we don't eat that much bread. We eat mostly fruits and vegetables these days.

I've had my bread machine for about 15 years. I don't bake in it, but I mix a lot of dough in it.
