Break with Tradition: 6 Unconventional Thanksgiving Pies

2009-11-16-UnusualPies.jpgFeel like shaking things up this year? Here are six decidedly non-traditional pies that would nonetheless look perfectly at home on your Thanksgiving table!

1. Cranberry Tart from The Kitchn - Cranberries are great for more than just sauce! This tart is a nice alternative for those of us who don't like super-sweet desserts.

2. Grape Pie from Martha Stewart - Think of blueberry pie, except with juicy sweet-tart grapes instead. This pie is especially fantastic made with Concord grapes and other local varieties.

3. Buttermilk Pie from Food & Wine - You have got to try this traditional Southern pie at least once. Once baked, the buttermilk turns custardy and sweet with just a hint of tang. It's like crème brulée's grown up cousin!

4. Shoofly Pie from A Splendid Table - Rich with molasses and sweetened with a good dose of brown sugar, a slice of this pie will satisfy any lingering dessert cravings after your holiday meal!

5. Chocolate S'more Pie from Epicurious - You don't tend to see a lot of chocolate in traditional Thanksgiving desserts, and we've never understood why! Toasted marshmallow fluff over chocolate cream with a graham cracker crust will do the job nicely.

6. Pear-Butterscotch Pie from Epicurious - Pears cooked in brown sugar until it melts into a butterscotch sauce all inside a flaky crust? Oh, very yum!

Do you have a non-traditional pie that you like to serve at Thanksgiving?

These look great! I was thinking of making my sweet potato pie a sweet potato meringue pie this year. Has anyone does this? I love to make lemon meringue, but I associate it so strongly with summer that it doesn't seem quite right for Thanksgiving.

I love sweet potato pie but have never made it with meringue. But if you're one of those who likes marshmallows with your sweet potatoes, it would probably taste really good!

Wow, that pear butterscotch pie just made my weekend baking plans.

I might give the pear butterscotch pie a try. Pears are so wonderful. Pears with brown sugar even more so!

I've had buttermilk pie numerous times but I wouldn't be able to convince my family to eat it. Wet bottom Shoo-fly pie is good, but I like its lighter, less cloying cousin the Amish vanilla pie more.

Standard pies on my family's Thanksgiving rotation are pumpkin cheesecake, pecan pie, apple pie, and lemon chess pie, so it might be fun to shake things up.

I love Shoo-fly pie! You never see it in Chicago.

I like making buttermilk pie -- gets rave reviews.

I use Martha Stewart's recipe, the one in her pie book, not the one on her website.

The Maiden Metallurgist - we need to start a Shoo-Fly Pie Petition to Hoosier Mama asap.

This is the first time I've ever seen Buttermilk Pie listed on nearly any website. I grew up with my grandmother' buttermilk pie and it's my all time favorite. The Food & Wine recipe is a bit different though. My have to give it a try sometime.

A family favorite is what we call "Blueberry Pie in a Cloud."
It is simply canned blueberries put into a pie shell that already has a layer of cream cheese, powdered sugar and whip cream mixed. Hence pie in a cloud. Oh, it is heavenly!

Chocolate peanut butter pie! It's the best, especially now that I know the secret of making little peanut butter crumbly bits to go on top.

Another off-the-wall example for your list is what's called Jeff Davis pie. It's a spice pie (you know, like spice cake only not cake). It's one of our old family recipes, from my great-great grandmother I think. Not my favorite, but it is something different.

I'm making something from a book I have called Sweety Pies by Patty Pinner. It has a lot of different pies that I've never heard of before. I've made a couple of them including a peanut butter pie that is similar to a pecan pie and it was amazing!

I always bring a couple of my Shaker lemon pies. Ol' Smitten Kitchen has the closest thing to my recipe:

Christmas Carol Cake - I don't care if it's Thanksgiving, Christmas, or my birthday...if apples are in season, it's in season. Why must Thanksgiving be associated with pies and Christmas with cookies/fudge anyway? Mix it up by mixing up the types of desserts you serve as well as the flavor.

This year I'm making a cranberry vinegar pie. It's based on a recipe I got from Martha Stewart's site that uses raisins. I made a trial version of the pie and was blown away by how good it was.
