Recipe Recommendation: Coca Cola Barbecue Sauce

2008_09_30-BBQRibs.jpgHave you ever used Coca-Cola as an ingredient in barbecue sauce? Fans claim it adds a nice sweetness to the sauce.

Here's one recipe, via Phil Mooney at Coca Cola Conversations:

Thick Barbecue Sauce

2 medium onions
3/4 cup Coca-Cola
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Shred or blender-chop onions. Combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil; cover pan; reduce heat and simmer about 45 minutes until sauce is very thick. Stir occasionally.

Makes about 2 cups.

B. has been experimenting with the Coca-Cola/ketchup barbecue recipe since he first read about it. Actually comes out much nicer than you might at first think!

This is even better with Dr. Pepper, if you're into that sort of thing.

I've made Nigella's Ham in Coke several times, which is pretty awesome, so it could work well...

Yea...well kind of... there is this chicken recipe that I love b/c all the ingredients are pantry staples:
1 cup ketchup
1 cup cola
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
4 - 6 chicken breasts - skinless boneless
salt/pepper breast, place in casserole dish, mix wet ingredients and pour over chicken
cover and bake 350 Degrees for 50 min.

It is surprisingly good.

I have used coca cola and ground ginger snaps as a "glaze" for ham, and it is delicious. I have also tried sprite on whole baked lemon chicken with excellent results.

My boyfriend and I have a disagreement about coca-cola cooking. He claims it the BEST and ONLY glaze for baking ham, and I reserve that title for ginger ale.
