How To Paint (and Stencil) a Kitchen Floor

2009_09_09-Floor.jpgWe've had quite a bit of focus on the kitchen floor lately, what with this gallery of painted floors and a look at painted floor cloths. Reader Jacqueline was inspired to send us her own kitchen floor solution. Take a peek at her kitchen floor before painting...

2009_09_09-Floor2.jpgQuite an improvement over the state of the kitchen floor before painting!

Jacqueline says: In response to painted kitchen floors:

We recently pulled up the self-stick tiles in our kitchen and painted the subfloor with a repeat pattern using exterior latex paint (a mistint from Lowes). It is part of our interim kitchen solution until we can fully renovate.

We love how the bright paint brightens up a dark kitchen, and the stencils are a great idea too. Have you ever painted a kitchen floor?

Did they put down any additional finish on the floor considering how high traffic a kitchen is?

@Melissa23: Because we were planning to have another floor down by now (we painted the floor in January), we did not bother to put a sealer over the paint. Or a second coat, for that matter. I have only had to touch it up once (when a piece of the old linoleum that we could not peel up decided to shake loose). We don't wear shoes in the house, so that helps keep abrasion down. We used semi-gloss, exterior grade paint.

Wow, that's pretty! I think it's great you did an interim renovation - I lived with a floor that I hated for ages until I could change it.

I once painted two very realistic looking Milk Bones on my kitchen floor, but my dog didn't fall for it AT ALL!
