Quick Weeknight Meals 2009: The Winners!!
Quick Weeknight Meals Recipe Contest 2009

2009_10_01-Winners.jpgDrumroll please! Here, after a month of delicious and tantalizing recipes, are the three fast, delicious weeknight meal recipes that (narrowly) won out with the most votes. We have to admit that we're pretty jazzed that the winning recipe is not only vegetarian but gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan — and utterly delicious!

Polenta is definitely the story of the day, with two of the recipes including it. The Omnivore runner-up has perhaps more buzzwords in the recipe list than anything else in the contest: Hello bacon, cream cheese and hot peppers! Yum!!

Here, without further ado, are the top three winners — chosen by reader vote.

Grand Prize Winner

Breanne's Polenta with Black Beans and Roasted Coconut Tomato Sauce

Omnivore Runner-Up

S.T.'s Tex-Mex Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Nuggets

Vegetarian Runner-Up

Rachel's Mushroom Ragout with Spinach-Parm Polenta

Huge congratulations to Breanne, S.T., and Rachel!! Thanks so much for these recipes; we are looking forward to trying them out. (And look for an email from us in the next day or two about your excellent prizes.)

Congratulations to everyone who entered and who shared their recipes with us. Voting of course is a subjective thing, in the end, but ultimately all of us are richer for you sharing your recipes and your cooking. We know that many of you have been enjoying all the recipes from this contest. We took a quick internal survey of all our site writers and editors, and we'll share our own personal favorites a little later today.

Until then...get cooking!

Congratulations to the winners, but I must say it is a little unfortunate that the recipe contest turned more into a popularity contest. It seems people who got the most votes did so by getting the most people to sign up for an account to vote for them.

In my opinion, I believe some of the other contestants should have won, and wish that the voting could have been contained to those who have already been members of the community.

Some may agree with me, some may not. Just expressing my views and hope no one takes offense.

Isn't that exactly why thekitchn runs contests like these - so that those involved will tell everyone they know and drive more traffic and interest to their site? The website benefits in every way, and we get a bunch of delicious recipes out of it. I was saddened by the serious lack of vegan entries but I think it made sense that the one that won was a yum meal that just about everyone would enjoy, no matter what their allergies or strong convictions about the shameful practices of the meat & dairy industry.

Totally agree with allebasii.

I'm waiting to see whose recipes staff of The Kitchn liked!

I'd love to see a recipe review for some of these too, either by Kitchn writers or readers. Maybe a weekly 'review this' post that readers can contribute to?

This was a great contest! One minor criticism: perhaps next time the voting windows could be open longer so we'd have a little more time to make them and give accurate reviews based on what they taste like, not just how they sound? I've made a couple of these, and I wish I'd had time to go back and give them a thumbs-up.
