Weekend Project: Bake Something New!

2009_02_26-BakeSomethingNew.jpgEvery week - make that every day - we come across dozens of new recipes that make us itch to break out the sugar. Unless we make it right away, the recipe often just gets lost in the pile. We seem to have accumulated quite a backlog of recipes tagged "Make Soon!" This weekend, we mean to change that...

Whether it's a file on your computer or a notebook stuffed with clippings, we're guessing you probably have a similar situation going on! Let's all pick one recipe from that backlog and make it this weekend. Okay? Okay!

Here are a few of recipes from our fellow Kitchn writers that we've had earmarked for a while:

Lemon Spongettes
Sticky Toffee Cakelets
Earl Grey Tea Cookies
Peanut Butter Oatmeal Monster Cookies
Big Pancake

And watch out this afternoon! We are posting a couple more baking recipes that you may want to try this weekend.

Any thoughts on what you'll bake this weekend?

I am going to attempt buttermilk biscuits tonight. It's Dinner week next week, so I need something to dazzle, since my turn is monday. Gonna eat 'em tonight with attempt 2 of a potato and onion fritatta.

Honestly, one of the best things I've done with my friends is Dinner week. Every other week, each of us take a day to make a full meal, with a dessert or appetizer. Before we spend hours playing WOW and wasting money on eating out. Now we spend hours playing WOW and eating really good homecooked stuff. The food is so rich, you don't mind starving during the in between week.

I bought everything for Linzer cookies 2 weeks ago. Need to stop being lazy and BAKE.

I am going to tackle Baking Bites' homemade Samoa Girl Scout cookie bars. I bought the stuff 2 weeks ago, and my dad (who loves Samoas) is coming to dinner on Sunday.

Been wanting to try Bittman's parmesan cream crackers so I think that's on the top of my list. And perhaps some whole wheat sandwich bread (never tried it, want to experiment). Here's to a blissful weekend ahead with NO committments on my calendar! :)

I'm going to make the scallion-gruyere biscuits (drop rolls? whatever--some kind of bread-lette) featured on this site last week or the week before. I think they'll be perfect with Sunday night's roasted tomato soup.

BTW, as someone very time-pressed who gets a lot of "help" from a 3-year-old in the kitchen, my personal trick for getting from "planning to bake" to "actually baking" is to measure out all the dry ingredients the night before when Madame is sleeping.

Does whole wheat bread count? I'm trying a recipe from The Breadbaker's Apprentice this weekend!

I just got asked to bake a red velvet cake. Not only have I never done red velvet, I have never done a layer cake. I think that counts!

I made banana pudding for the first time. If I made the pudding from scratch, does that count?

You all are great! I hope the baking is going (or went!) well this weekend. And yes, all your cooking definitely "counts"! :-)
