Recipe: Pickletini

2008_05_19-pickletini.jpgThis weekend we were treated to a special dirty martini from our favorite pickle joint in town, Rick's Picks. Just in time. In an effort to get you ready for summer, we're going to kick off a week of original cocktail recipes, and we begin with a bang: it's Pickletini time.

This weekend we held a little book party here in the office for the launch of Maxwell's new book. Guests were treated to martinis made by our friends at Rick's Picks: a special concoction using a whisper of brine from a jar of Rick's Spears of Influence. Swap out the boring old olive for a few nibblets of pickle, and you have a pickletini.

We rocked this drink plastic-cup-style since we were serving about a hundred thirsty media folk, but normally we do recommend a proper martini glass. However, the pickletini is a casual affair, so don't be afraid to break the mold and be unconventional. Given what we saw at the end of the evening, the only advice is to keep the bar ware at six ounces and under. These babies are potent.

Pickletini

5 parts good-quality vodka
1 part vermouth
1 part brine from a jar of Spears of Influence
2 olive-sized pieces of a Spear of Influence

Shake up the liquids in a martini shaker with ice, pour into a glass with the two pickle pieces.

I had the pleasure of trying these, and just had to add a quick comment. The Spears of Influence have both cumin and lime in them, adding a smoky tart note to the dirty martini. If you don't have Rick's Picks near you, I'd recommend experimenting with different flavorful pickles.
