One Improvement You Want to Make In Your Kitchen?

2008_09_17-Kitchen.jpgWe've been hard at work in a new kitchen, and we've been thinking about the big and small things that make a kitchen feel like home. Whether you are on the brink of a full renovation like Keith and Brent or just looking to organize your recycling system, you probably have at least one thing you'd like to improve or upgrade in your kitchen.

What is it?

I, for instance, am still working on getting an antique stove vent to work, fixing a broken undercounter light, researching new bulbs for my vintage mod light fixture. And that's just the big stuff! I also need to reorganize my storage containers, find good storage for flour and sugar, get my pantry in shape, and more.

What's the next improvement you want to make in your kitchen, and how are you going about it? It's Home Cooking month and we just want to help you make your kitchen more homey, comfortable, and inviting.

I would love to add a backsplash behind our stove and sink. My husband and I keep talking about it and keep flip flopping (since we live in condo, we want to keep the resale value up) on something permant like tile or temporary like plastic stickup tiles. We will see what we decide.

honestly...I would like to finally figure out the best way to organize the food in my fridge so it makes more sense and I see it all. I'm always rearranging it.

We don't own it. But if we did, there are many many...starting with new appliances and ending with a fabulous work-top island....ah...dreams...

Really want to replace the only counter in the tiny kitchen. That would allow replacing the tiny single bowl sink with something big enough to really wash the dishes in (kitchen is too small for a dishwasher), and removing the weird angled undercounter cupboard that makes access to the upper cabinets difficult. Already have the tiles for a new backsplash, that would be more appropriate to the house style than the "country-with-a-K" tiles that are there now. I'd like the countertop to be new Ikea butcherblock, except immediately around the sink. Yeah, kitchen dreams...all it takes is money...am gathering materials bit by bit, and saving my pennies...

I really, really, really want to put up a shelf for my cookbooks because they're taking up valuable cabinet space...but alas, between the laundry room door, cabinets, huge sliding glass doors, etc. there is NO wall space left. It's a very tiny kitchen.

I really want something better to put my microwave on. It is on a white wire shelf that looks terrible and I am always worried it will fall over.

(Faith, is that your kitchen in your new place? And did you two do that tilework and shelving? If so, AWESOME.)

My current top kitchen projects are 1) ripping off 1960s paneling, removing 1910s wallpaper and cheesecloth and thousands of tiny nails holding on the cheesecloth, and priming and painting the huge horizontal boards beneath in hopes that it will look beautiful and vintage and homey and not crappy. (I am hesitating before the enormity of this task and the uncertainty of its results.)

2) is easier: finding a kitchen cabinet type thingy to fill in the last bit of wallspace in the kitchen to give us a little more workspace, then installing open shelving above that for pretties, dishes, etc. I just found a perfect match to our (homemade 1950s) cabinets on Ebay, but it's ten inches too long. I bought it anyway and will put it on the adjoining back porch/coffee roastery/recycling chaos room.

Oh, here's one more project: convincing the restorer that's got our vintage Chambers stove to get moving and FINISH it already. He's had it forever.

fjorlief, that sounds like our kitchen renovation, except we had to replace a HUGE sink in order to install any counter at all. All that was in our kitchen was a sink, a stove, and a fridge. We did a 1-week renovation last fall, thanks to cabinets and counters from Ikea that my brother and I installed, and some carefully timed delivery/installation of the appliances. What's still undone, almost a year later, is the lighting (though we did add under-"cabinet" lights by installing a shelf), and we haven't been able to make up our minds about a hood over the stove.

I want to carve out some "pet space" in my kitchen. Our new guy, Jack the Cat, is still so new his food, bowls and...*ahem*...personal equipment are in a major temporary state. I need to find a way to incorporate his needs into ours, in a fairly small renter's kitchen.

On the list for our winter projects are 1: stripping off ninety years' worth of layers of paint from the cabinets, which also involves all new hinges and catches (which wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't need nearly eighty hinges and forty catches...), and 2: taking down and replacing the fake-tile paneling that was poorly installed before we moved here.

And I've never been more ready for winter.

I'm itching to paint my kitchen. Transform it from it's boring white bland palette to a more energetic colour scheme. I also would like to remove some cupboard doors and paint the inside. Buy new dishes (without chips) and showcase some collectables that I recently recieved from my grandma.

then magically, my landlord will come and rip up the gross lino and replace it with beautiful rich coloured hardwood. That is my dream.
