Virtual CSA Box: Yuletide Surprise

2007_12_06-CSA.jpgMost Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm programs have wrapped up by this time of year, but Two Small Farms in Northern California is offering a one-time Yuletide CSA Box. For $25 you can pre-order a surprise box of locally grown vegetables, available for pickup the week before Christmas. If you live in Monterey, San Jose, or the general Bay Area, this is for you!

So, what's still growing the week before Christmas? Depending on the weather, winter squash, potatoes, carrots, cooking greens, fennel, and leeks may all be available in this box. These are all probably in season where you are too.

What are you seeing at your local greenmarket or farmer's market right now?

The farmers' market in Madison, WI now mostly has winter squashes, potatoes and some greenhouse greens. Other than that there's lots of cheese and baked goods.

The farmers' market where I live wraps up before Thanksgiving, but last week, I was on vacation in San Francisco and saw the market there. I'm so jealous! There were tons of beets, persimmons, beets, persimmons, beets, and persimmons. Also, beautiful fat carrots, grapes, and pretty much any other edibles you can think of. I got my first taste of June Taylor preserves, and actually said "wow" out loud.

My CSA is in winter shares now, so root vegetables and stuff like that. Last few times we got carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes, cabbage, butternut squash, spinach, onions, garlic, etc. There's a pick-up Friday and another one on the 21st, I'll let you know what we get.

Isn't shipping nationwide kind of not the point?
