So much for hot chocolate - if you're in NYC you might be getting ready to write in for good lemonade recipes. Baby, it's warm outside. Strip off your sweater and tell us what's on your food-mind.

i've been very into winter salads lately. grated cabbage salads with mint and cider vinegar. grated beet and apple with lemon juice. crunchy sprouts and spinach salads with blood oranges and pecans. all that raw food gives me energy this year, even though i typically crave hearty-hearty in the winter.
that said, my friends and i made coq au vin last night and twas good!

Lisa,

Send us some photos of your winter salads, we'll publish them. And recipes too if you can.

Happy New Year!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good book on city gardening, specifically growing herbs? I know it's a little early to think about summer cooking, but I recently moved to an apartment with a small but sunny terrace-ish area outside my kitchen window, and it's making me dream big dreams about fresh basil, mint, cilantro. I'd love to spend the winter reading up and preparing for my herb garden, as I have never grown anything successfully before.

GM - I think we can help you out right here. Come April, you all are going to find out that I'm a gardener. To grow your own food is such a gift, and in the city, quite a luxury. Perhaps we should start going over the basics earlier so you can prepare, get supplies etc. As far as an herb box goes, you really can't do much before March, when you'll start seeds indoors, if you decide to grow from seed. I'll post this tomorrow with some seed recommendations, and also see what other ideas readers have. Good luck!

My mom gets me a subscription to "Taste of Home" magazine every year. As hometown hokey as it is, I have found some decent recipes in it. I organize a work soup club, and it's great for finding decent soups that can hang out in a crock pot all day. Have any of you experienced the quitisential "mom cooking" (at least my mom) magazine?

hey guys. i'm getting a digital camera for my bday next week (35, gulp!), at which point I will definitely post some pictures of my salads. My cycle lately is that I make two huge gorgeous salads on Sundays for the girls who come over for our defiant "we're not depressed by Sunday night" movie nights!

Lisa - when is your birthday?

Actually, I'm making turkey and bean chili for my soup club tomarrow-not very summery, but I just got the new "eating well" which features a close-up, cover shot of bright, beautiful bananas. Should I try banana fritters? hm.....
