Strawberries at the 96th Street Farmers' Market
New York City

2009_05_22-market2.jpgThe market on West 96th Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam) dwindles down to a sliver of itself in the winter, but it's back—with radishes, asparagus, and now strawberries. There was even live music this morning while we were there.

This is great news for those of us who live uptown and don't always have time to go down to Union Square. The staff member we spoke to said the market will continue to grow over the next few weeks, with more vendors and produce on the way.

2009_05_22-market1.jpgThe strawberries came from a farm in southern New Jersey. They're the first that we've seen in New York City this year, and we're celebrating by making this cake from Smitten Kitchen (with strawberries instead of raspberries):

Wow, I am totally in support of buying and eating local, but $6 a quart is extremely expensive for strawberries, no? Does the price drop later in the season?
