Farmers Market Report: Century City

Century City might seem like an unlikely place for a farmers' market, yet every Thursday one sprouts up at the base of the towering skyscrapers that line Constellation Avenue. The market gets an interesting mix of people, mostly suits, office assistants, and construction workers, although a few recreational shoppers trickle out from nearby the Century City mall. The fact that most of the clientele is on their lunch break likely explains the high number of stalls selling things like hotdogs wrapped in bacon, rotisserie chickens, burritos, and Thai food. But like any good farmers' market, there's lots of great produce, baked goods, and nuts.

When I was there, I spotted an interesting mixture fruits and vegetables representing late summer up as well as fall going into winter, which makes sense, this being Southern California. It's the nearly November and the temperature has been in the 80's. There were still heirloom tomatoes, peaches, and corn. I saw lots of apples and pears, some beautiful pomegranates, and even a few brussels sprouts. One of the best things about living in SOCAL is the produce and as such it's a very unique time to go to a farmers' market, when one season is transitioning into another, a shift that the farmers' market in Century City represents well.

The Century City Farmers' Market, runs every Thursday between 11am and 2:30 pm. It is located on Constellation Blvd, just East of Avenue of the Stars.

since the kitchen is more all over the country than ny, sf, la, or chicago apartment therapies, do you think when you do these "farmers market reports" or whatnot, you could be sure you have the city somewhere in the opening pargraph, or maybe even the title?

for example, this is clearly not at the century city mall in chicago... but one does exist there as well.

One in Chicago? Good point. This Century City, however, is a section in LA next to Beverly Hills and there happens to be a mall there. But its a huge business district - entertainment lawyers, agents, and banking mostly.

I'm in NY now but used to work there (actually, on Century Park East) and go to this market on Thursays. Now I'm missing LA. Ah, the Thai food...
