Good Product: Trader Joe's Wild Rice

2008_12_8-TJWildRice.jpgWhen we talked about our love of wild rice a few months ago, several of you mentioned buying it at Trader Joe's. We looked for it the next time we were in the store, and sure enough, there it was!

2008_12_8-TJWildRice2.jpgFinally, here is a relatively inexpensive and readily available source for one of our favorite grains. One 16-ounce bag goes for $4.99 - a good deal for this grain, we think!

The rice grains are dark, slightly glossy, and uniform in length - all good signs of quality wild rice. We cooked up a batch and were rewarded with chewy bits of burst rice (a good thing!) that had a deep nutty and grassy flavor.

Try wild rice in these dishes:

Wild Rice Salad with Roasted Green Beans and Cranberries
Rice and Mixed Greens Salad with Dates, Cashews, and Chickpeas

Or substitute wild rice for the grain in these dishes:

Warm Farro Salad with Roasted Squash, Persimmons, and Pecans
Warm Wheat Salad (or Reverse Tabbouleh!)
Roasted Beet Salad with Barley, Feta, and Red Onion

We're glad we found this product - and that Trader Joe's has once again impressed us with its quality. Now we can stop making our Minnesota relatives smuggle bags to us in their luggage!

I like to add wild rice to tomato soup. I also add cumin and garlic, and then fry up tortillas for a quick tortilla soup.
