I wish they'd open at 8am so I could be there -- I won't be able to get there until the evening, after work, and it'll be a zoo. That whole area is now pickup central, thanks to Whole Foods and NYU's presence and the farmer's market and the big movie/virgin store complex. Plus DSW/Filen's Basement & then Barnes & Noble at the other end of Union Square.
I'll try it first thing Saturday morning, I guess.

Oh my god, cancel all my plans! (I'm only half kidding, eeek)
What's everyone's favorite Trader Joe's item? I'm a sucker for their instant pork-fried rice and ice cream mochi. And broken white chocolate.

Trader Joe's is great if you like food that was put together in a commissary and shipped in. While they have some bargains in the wine dept and some interesting frozen items, I've always been disappointed in everything else.
It will be fun to go and see it, but I will hardly be a regular. Trader Joe's is hardly a great solution for the real foodie crowd, in my opinion.
Sorry to be the pooper.

favorites:
- frozen green chilli and cheese tamales (great lunch) (buy them in bulk)
- frozen pork pot stickers
- frozen artichoke ravioli
YUM!
One great thing about trader joes-- in addition to their custom names for products like their ittalian line "trader giottis" ---is that their frozen meal selection is a great alternative to the inedible tf dinners at other grocery stores.
Plus a fun game to play with friends is to see who can fill up their cart the most and not go over $100. Or who has the lowest bill!

I can see how TJs can be a nice place to shop if you don't do much cooking, their prepared foods are better then your grocery store frozen dinners, but for people who cook at home a lot, I think you're going to be disappointed.
Maybe I'm spoiled on the West Coast, but I'd buy produce at Costco before TJs, it's too banged up by the time it gets there. Their cheeses are badly kept and full of off-odors and the nuts are fresh, but smaller (= more skin)and lesser grade then what you can buy elsewhere.
Not to say I don't occasionally go there, but when I do, it's to pick up fresh flowers, cases of sparkling water and Valrhona chocolate bars.
Recently I was in Calif on vacation and I read in the Sunday Paper of the Daily Breeze that Trader Joes was mapping out its growth which included Michigan. Do you know where in Michigan they plan to build? I always shop there when visiting Calif. I really like the fresh and organic produces I find there,
Thank You
