The Battery Maritime Building may be turned into an open market, as reported in this morning's New York Times. The building, a Beaux-Arts landmark at the foot of Manhattan, would house dozens of food stalls, coffee bars, and open seating areas; a veritable "culinary temple."
The New York City Economic Development Corporation, who is looking for a developer for the project, used words in their request for proposals like "artisanal cheese," "hand-crafted wines," "humanely raised grass-fed meats" and "foodies" - it's the kind of development poetry we like to hear.

San Francisco did something similar with their Ferry Plaza http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/ The Ferry Plaza is a beautiful year-round farmers market focusing on local and sustainable. It also houses some wonderful local restaurants, a wine store and some cooking stores. Open seven days a week but especially packed on the weekends, particularly in high summer when the produce stands spill onto the sidewalks and into the back lot. A great use for a beautiful, old historical building.
sounds wonderful. any idea when it would happen?
I've always wished that I could physically pick up Reading Terminal Market in Phila. and move it to NYC. If you ever go to Philly, that's a must. So finally, something similar in New York!
