Giants of the Web Get Hungry

2006_11_2_yahoofoodlogo.jpgYahoo launched a food section yesterday. The new section promises recipes, restaurant reviews, and wine and entertaining reports. Yahoo, the most visited in the U.S., is a search, technology, and online video powerhouse. There's many ways that Yahoo's tools like Del.icio.us bookmarking and Flickr photos can be used by cooks.

Just in time for holiday cooking, many other large online media companies are expanding their food coverage. CNet's recently re-launched Chow and Chowhound are growing and seeking more national advertisers while both Martha and Food Network are expanding their web sites with new, online only content. Epicurious is expanding with blogs and other new features.

I say personality goes a long way in the Kitchen. While the new Yahoo site seems pretty faceless and celebrity-driven today, I hope Yahoo will use this new food site as a way to showcase ideas and recipes from home cooks.

The site has several content partners including: Martha Stewart Living, Wolfgang Puck, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Food & Wine, Epicurious, allrecipes.com, Cook's Illustrated, Eating Well, Taste of Home, and Reader's Digest. I hope they add some food bloggers and BBC Food to this list soon.

(Thanks for the tip, Joanne!)

Maybe Yahoo was listening to advertisers, or maybe they just watched us here at TasteTV (http://www.TasteTV.com)
