This just in...
CHOW Magazine has just announced that they are suspending their print magazine after one year and four glorious issues. The suspension is said to be temporary, "for what will probably be six months," in order to raise a bit of cash and to build a website. The website aims to disseminate the quirky, innovative CHOW-ish approach to food and cooking.
Although we're wiping away a few tears in mourning of their print version, when we spoke to our friends at CHOW last night, we were assured that the new site will be exciting, and in no way less CHOW-ish than the magazine. We are thrilled to see how CHOW translates their spirit off of paper and onto the screen.

Sigh. I hope this is just a temporary stoppage of the print publication, because I do really look forward to receiving it in the mail...
Bummer . . . there's something so great about having a print version of a magazine. And I just paid for my subscription.
Chris,
Apparently they're promising to continue printing after the hiatus, and those who have paid subscriptions will have them fulfilled. (I just gave subscriptions as holiday gifts to several people!)
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
i just "found" chow as of their holiday issue and i just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it
i too gave it as christmas presents (both to myself and others)
this is SO depressing
i never believe people when they say "don't worry, we'll be back"
sigh
i don't even really want to see the mag as a website, the beauty of a magazine is that it's something you can hold and keep forever
my idealism is shattered
Ann - my sentiments exactly. I JUST subscribed having bought the holiday issue at the newstand. Boooo!!!!
Well, hopefully, they can get back to print sooner rather than later.
I got two holiday issues stuck together in my mailbox, and never felt motivated enough to get the one magazine back to its rightful owner (the address wasn't terribly close by, maybe 15 blocks away). Now I feel guilty because that individual likely never received the last (for the time being) issue of Chow. Will I get the bad karma or the mailman who always throws my magazines on the foyer flor, anyway.
Damn! I just subscribed. Oh well. I guess I can wait.
You guys are joking right? Chow? You liked it? I thing the "idea" of Chow is great... but the execution has been totally disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I know some of the staffers and they have great reputations, but this magazine is so contrived. And I can't believe the writing is so terrible. You NY'rs should know better -- even Time Out NY's food section is better.

TONYs writing is better?
uh, okay
well, as they say sallyman, to each their own
As a brief follow-up to my previous comment, why hasn't Chow notified subscribers directly about suspension of the print issue?
As a recent subscriber, I would appreciate a postcard, or even an e-mail, notifying me of the status of my "order". Thankfully, I do read this blog but what about those people who don't? The people at Chow ought to get moving on at LEAST a posting on their website to inform subscribers.
i just read Chow for the first time this week. Even stuck on a plane with absolutely no other reading matter, I could barely get through the issue. Some of their ideas are intriguing, but the writing was bad. Not punk rock bad, either. Maybe their overhaul will give them some time to reevaluate their editorial voice a little bit.
Ugh. I subscribed, then cancelled after on issue. Terrible.
