New IKEA for the Kitchen: 15 Maybe-Good Things

2009_03_31-IKEA.jpg2009_03_31-IKEAThumbs.jpgWe have a love/hate relationship with IKEA when it comes to kitchen supplies. (Well, and everything else too, I suppose.) On the one hand, you can find some terrific kitchen tools at low prices. On the other hand, we've been guilty of buying too much and taking home low-quality things we just never use. So now we usually stick to our tried and tested favorite kitchen tools from IKEA.

But every season we do like to look through the new catalog to see if there are any potential candidates for new classics. Here are a few things we are eyeing; have you seen any of them in person yet?

Because, like I said above, while it's best to stick to a few classics at IKEA, every now and then a great new product comes along. One I've been particularly appreciating lately is that one-size-fits-all-pans double boiler. It's perfect for dipping candy and cake balls, and for only $5 too.

Here's a collection of intriguing things from the new spring collection. Have you picked up any of these yet?

FIRST ROW
• 1 DRÖMMAR red baking pan - Like the angular shapes. $6.99

• 2 FÄRGRIK TROLSK plate - Nice pattern; it comes in blue or red. $3.99

• 3 SOCKERÄRT vase/pitcher - Love the retro vintage styling, and multiple sizes. $6.99-$19.99

• 4 FÄRGRIK TROLSK bowl set - Great new turquoise color in this season's tableware. $2.99/2

• 5 TROLSK melamine serving set - Unusual shapes and nice bright colors. $3.99

SECOND ROW
• 6 DRÖMMAR pastry cutters - Nice! IKEA is getting into Martha territory here. $5.99

• 7 IDELIG mixing bowl - More of that turquoise color. $7.99-$9.99

• 8 ENVIS spatulas - Great shapes and colors. Detachable head, too. $4.99/2

• 9 FLÄCKIG measuring cup - With see-through window. $1.49

• 10 DRÖMMAR reusable cake doilies - Cute, and they open all sorts of DIY ideas. $1.49/four

THIRD ROW
• 11 ZITA cotton apron - Nice pattern. $4.99

• 12 DRÖMMAR cookie cutters - We see a snail, a fox, moose, hedgehog, squirrel, and bear. $3.99

• 13 DRÖMMAR stencils - Cake stencils for use with powdered sugar or glittery sugar. $1.49

• 14 Red DRÖMMAR muffin tin - Coated with Teflon. Hmm. $9.99

• 15 SMARTA pie dish - Good plain basic. $6.99

Have you bought anything at IKEA recently that's been worth the trek, crowds, and mad temptation of cinnamon rolls?

I bought the ENVIS spatulas and love them. The handles are chunky heavy melamine so they're great to handle mixes and doughs without bending. I love them. I also got the FLACKIG measuring cup which is great because it is very cheap. oh I love ikea.

their higher end knives are shockingly good for the low price.

I bought the Drommar reusable cake doilies and used them to great effect for a bake sale display. Durable, cute, and nice colors. They have some coordinating cocktail-sized paper napkins, but I forget the name. I also got the cake stencils but haven't had a chance to use them yet. Looking forward to it, though.

I bought this coffee press and I love it. I also own their knock-off dutch oven, and I like it. I saw a lot of that stuff last time I was there (about a month ago we made the trek from Nashville to Atlanta). I wanted more kitchen stuff, but we were also buying a duvet cover so that took up a lot of our IKEA budget.

Their shoe horns for $.99, the bamboo spatulas (but I like the ones above better, I think). I still have wine glasses I bought from an Ikea in Germany in 1988 for about $.25 each - they are thin, but elegant, and when one breaks, I don't blanch. I bought 36, I am down to about 12.

I have to go to Ikea for the spatulas, the pie plate, and the mixing bowl soon. Hell, I have to go just for the cinnamon rolls! They are cheap, and not too gooey-sweet-fat-overly cinnamony. But the trip takes the whole day, and I am doing gardening for a few weekends.

I also have one of their dutch ovens and I use it almost every single week. A gorgeous green color and it works...well, exactly like a covered dutch oven.

I am on the hate end of the Ikea spectrum. I've been two or three times. I have never bought kitchenwares there because they always look so flimsy. That, and when I went to buy Billy bookcases to build a wall unit, the experience was so terrible I swore I'd never go back. Love the shelves, but didn't love Ikea.

And yet! Hedgehog shaped cookies make me think maybe I should go again. And the baking pan. And the cake doilies.

I second the comment about the knives! I bought some Ikea knives about 5 years ago and they are STILL the best knives I have. I don't know why. But I know I like it!

I bought their pepper mill for the second time last week. I bought the first one about 10 yrs ago and sold it on ebay to buy a more expensive and fancier one. But kicked myself for doing so when I discovered all traditional mills out there required some sort of saucer underneath it to catch the crumbs.
I was ecstatic when I saw that they still had the same one after all these years (first generation was a black, this one’s navy blue). Of course bought it and enjoying the no-mess upside down design.

Can someone point me to the IKEA dutch oven? Searched the website with no luck. Thanks.

Love those cake doilies and stencils. I feel so inspired to bake. They'll jazz up my vegan, agave-sweetened-by-necessity baked stuff now that I have to cut out some stuff I love but cannot have any more. Cute!

I purchased the reusable doilies last week...(haven't had a chance to try them out yet) and ALMOST purchased the ENVIS spatulas but they were SO HEAVY that I decided against them.

I love the three center things up above: bowl, spatulas and measuring cup. If only I needed them (I could probably justify the spatulas, but nothing else).

I do want to get some storage stuff next time I'm there though. i think it's worth getting the higher end stuff-- we got the big set of assorted storage stuff a few years ago, and it's a nightmare to try mixing and matching the lids, and they aren't as snug as you'd want them to be either.

We bought Ikea wine glasses for our wedding. My parents already owned 2 dozen of them, and buying the rest was cheaper than renting.

I also love their dishtowels!

I second their french press mentioned above! I bought it to replace a huge monstrosity of a coffee maker and it's fantastic.

HEDGEHOG COOKIE CUTTER omg omg omg

I second the cookie cutter love. Super OMG.

I heart IKEA big time. Yeah some of their stuff is crappy and gonna wear out in a year or two, but at least it looks nice. A lot of other crappy accessible stuff out on the market looks like garbage. And IKEA makes up for the junky things (for ex. IMHO the LACK tables) by having very durable and nice quality products that will last a long time, esp. if you care for them well.

My favorite IKEA kitchen items? The KAFFE press, the veggie steamer, the BEKVAM kitchen cart, dishtowels, $4.99 million piece tupperware set, and the zester. Ooh and the adorable BUSIG glasses I just bought with the little elephants on them.

Some months back the spot-welded handle on one of my old Revereware saucepans just popped off one day. I ended up going to IKEA and picking up this sauteuse instead. Love it, love it, love it. Now I wish the rest of my Revere pots would fall apart and give me an excuse to replace more of them. Alas, no luck yet.

And there is not a week that goes by when I don't use my Charm grater. The built-in container is the best.

I almost bought those muffin tins, then I came upon the realization that they'll minimize muffin top mass. That's the best part of any muffin, am I right?

I tend to be disappointed with IKEA utensils. I bought a pancake-turner spatula recently and the edge was a little too thick to get under things easily. The wire loops on the whisks tend to boing out of whack and won't go back. Generally the tools seem a bit clunky.

The cheese grater is nice but Bodum makes (or made?) one that is easier to use because it's a little smaller and the sides are curved to fit your hand. I think IKEA's design is maybe a knockoff of theirs.

That said, I like their dishes in general, and I love those nesting cookie and tea tins they come out with every year! Such a nice alternative to the cutesie designs that show up around the holidays.

My favorite thing that I have a hard time not buying every time I'm there are the plastic shopping totes. They're only $1.50 and are great for groceries, obviously, but also for lugging plants, bags of mortar, odds & ends--whatever! I like the graphics on them much better than the ones sold in grocery stores, which always seem to be advertising something.

I always freak out when I go into Ikea and run out screaming without buying anything. However the last time I made it through 6 hours of picking out wardrobes and getting the parts and pieces together. Then the next day and a half assembling them.

Two medium size Pax cabinets with sliding doors. Went together very nicely and one Small unit with a mirrored door.

Right up to the top of the ceiling.

I, too, have had knives from Ikea that have lasted forever and were cheap to boot. I adore them.

After realizing the even the largest of my grandma's mixing bowls wasn't big enough to accomodate the batter for one of her cake recipes (what ~did~ she use for that, I wonder?), I recently picked up the large IDELIG mixing bowl, and it's really nice. It has a nice spout to pour batter, the bottom has a rubber ring to keep the bowl in place, and the high, steep sides keep me from slopping stuff all over the counter. Looks cute on the shelf, too!
