Mmm... Pork Cheeseburgers
Gourmet

2009_05_15-porkburger.jpgWe're heading to a friend's backyard tonight for our first grill-out of the year. And we're always happy with traditional burgers, but this pork cheeseburger is like an exciting, shiny new toy. Like a turkey burger, but way more interesting...

These pork cheeseburgers from the June issue of Gourmet look so juicy and decadent—not adjectives we often use to describe a turkey burger. Why have we never had a pork burger before? We've had lamb burgers. And we eat pulled pork sandwiches a lot. But somehow pork in the form of a patty has been overlooked.

These are seasoned with chipotle peppers and topped with avocado and tomatillo, although we think some pickled vegetables could stand in for the tartness of the tomatillo.

Of course, no medium-rare burgers here. You'll need to keep the pork on the grill (or grill pan) until it's cooked through.

I made Thai-style pork burgers once, and they were wayyyy too rich for us. The flavor was great, but the next time I did them, I just made tiny patties and floated them in broth. I don't think I would try ground pork in a burger again. I like the idea of this sandwich with pork cutlet or something, though.

Pork burgers can be exciting! Here's one I tried--

No bun, but you get the idea. I think they are a great alternative to turkey if seasoned well. Or wrapped in bacon.

Sounds tasty, but I think I would top it with just the cheese and some red onion. That seems like a lot of mayo and cilantro.

This does make me think of menchikatsu sando, or breaded and fried ground pork patty sandwiches. With some tonkatsu sauce, so good.

Also, I did make small patties out of leftover gyoza filling this one time...that was pretty tasty too.

We do pork burgers all the time. Pineapple in a pork burger with a little sweet chili sauce is fabulous.

I never heard or had a pork cheeseburger before. It's nice to try, especially the burger in that pic looks so yummy.
