Straus Family Creamery
Sonoma County, CA

2008_09_19-StrausCreamery.jpgIf you've shopped at Rainbow Grocery or Bi-Rite Market, you've probably seen those glass bottles with the cream-top milk and creamer. Most likely, they came from Straus Family Creamery in Sonoma County.

Straus Family Creamery began in 1941 and has remained in the Straus family. Today, it is the only California milk producer that runs both an organic dairy and an organic creamery. In addition to their cream-top milk and cream-top half-and-half, they also sell ice cream, yogurt, butter, and barista milk. The liquids come in reuseable glass bottles that can be returned for a bottle deposit.

The cows are raised near the ocean at Tomales Bay, where they have clean, fresh air and grass that's tinged with salt air. Their milk is absolutely delicious. All the dairy products from Straus are organic and hormone-free.

This is what real milk should taste like. It is unbelievably delicious.

My kids say it tastes like a milk shake, straight from the bottle. Alas, the price is a tad high, so it is a sometimes- indulgence rather than an everyday staple.

you can get straus yogurts (quart size) in whole milk or non fat styles at trader joe's - they're red or blue and are sold under the TJs label "european style" or something. muy excelente and muy affordable! $2.99/quart.

Straus is the best! I work for TJ's and was sad when I transferred up here to Washington that I could not get their cream top milk or whole milk yogurt anymore. Then we started carrying the "european style organic yogurt" that Joan in SB mentioned above. Made for Trader Joes privately by Straus. Hooray!!

We love their half & half. I had no idea they make yogurt too. Hopefully they have it at my Whole Foods!

You know, you can get it at places besides Rainbow Grocery or Bi-Rite Market -- we have good markets in the East Bay too, like Berkeley Bowl, not to mention Whole Foods and Andronico's, which also carry Strauss. And their ice cream is fantastic!

Their milk is great. Used to get it all the time before I became lactose intolerant. Sigh.

ok, i recently purchased the straus milk and was wondering what you're suppose to do with the cream top? do you put it over something, throw it out or leave it in there?

Straus milk does taste good. I just wish that they sold it, or some of their supply, unpasteurised--sometimes referred to as "raw milk." Because Straus only offers their milk pasteurised, I started drinking the raw milk from Claravale or Organic Pastures. The taste of that milk is so much better than Straus's. And because it is unpasteurised, all the good things for your health that is in milk is not destroyed.
