Alameda Flea Market: Kitchen Loot and Food Report

2008_04_11-Alameda01.jpgIt seems as if half the Bay Area was at the Alameda Flea Market last Sunday - I've never seen such lines or had to park so far back from the entrance! Our group got a little fretful as we waited in line to pay our $5 entrance fee. What if all the good stuff is already taken? Which, of course, is silly.

The endless aisles and piles (some more "flea", others more antique) are never exhausted and we were delighted to pick up plenty of good loot for the kitchen.

Our strict $25 limit scored us two French antique linen towels, two wooden bowls, six vintage linen napkins, two cup and saucer sets with matching bowls, a sliver fork, a camel cookie cutter and a wee porcelain doe!

2008_04_11-Alameda02.jpgWhile it's not the main event for most people, I found myself equally enthralled with the food. For $9, I got a delicious lunch from the India Gourmet of Watsonville. The handmade naan, cooked tandoori style and fresh out of the oven, was wrapped around a well-spiced and tender lamb curry and the mango lassi, a lovely shade of creamy orange, was sweet and cooling. The folks at the Feel Good Bakery do a nice scone and those little bread puddings looked tempting, too. But we just couldn't bear the incredibly long lines at the grilled sausage tent or the kettle corn shack. Maybe if we arrive earlier next month…

as a child, that camel cookie cutter cut much play-doh.

I finally attended (I've ONLY been living in Alameda for a year and a half...) and I was wondering if it was always that busy. I wonder if it's because the SFChron had an article about the Antiques Fair a few days before.

Glad to hear the food is good, it sure smelled delightful! Now to get my mom and sister up here for the next one...

I had one of those camel cookie cutters too - I'm sure it's still in my mom's cupboards somewhere.

We made Christmas ornaments with it one year - still comes out of the box.

I think I have a set of those type cookie cutters including the camel from when I was first married. Hmmm - does that make me an antique too? Just asking ...
