Impromptu Breakfast in New York City

2007_08_08_subway-crowds.JPG

Wild weather here in New York City has shut down our subway system this morning. The tracks are flooded and the drains can't keep up with all the water. We did our best to rush into midtown Manhattan this morning, but there's no go. We surrendered, grabbed an ice coffee, and headed back home.

Now, we're scrounging around the fridge and cupboards to see what we can make for breakfast.

We've got bacon, half an heirloom tomato, a little bit of Parmesan cheese, some white bread. We heard talk of bloody marys and beer while we were trying to get on the train platform. Hmm, any other New York cooks putting breakfast on and trying to make the best of it? It's kind of like having a snow day in August.

Here at AT headquarters, we are only missing one staff member - the rest of us are fortunate to be able to walk to work. But if I were stuck at home, I might slap some almond butter on toast right about now, and take a swig of milk. Yum.

You've got the ingredients for a bacon and tomato toastie....yum.

I imagine this sort of subway disruption is a pretty rare occurrence?

Michelle, it happens about once a year or so, but this time is worse than usual becasue all of the train lines went out. Usually a few stay passable.

I've got my bread in the toaster for my BLT!

Luckily, I decided to fix a quick breakfast at home for myself and my husband before we headed out - two hours later, when I arrived at my desk, I was really happy that I had done so!

I fried up two eggs, toasted some wholegrain sourdough from Bread Alone, slathered the toast with the last bits of some leftover gorgonzola cremificato, added the last couple of slices of parma cotto we had in the fridge, then placed an egg (with the yolk still a little runny) on each sandwich and closed 'em up. We ate in the living room while watching NY1.

I grabbed a treat for breakfast at the Union Sq farmers market as I made the 40 block trek from home to work...

I went back home and made some eggs with toast and homemade butter (the product of a bored Sunday afternoon).
